Thank you Kadiri for the clarification of the origin of the unitary system we have.--The truth remains that the Nigerian Igbo leader was the one that promulgated a degree that put an end to the constitutional federalism in Nigeria.Segun OgungbemiSent from my iPhone--In fact, Major General Johnson Thompson Aguiyi Ironsi, on 12 February 1966, appointed Francis Nwokedi as one-man commission of enquiry into the establishment of an administrative machinery for a United Nigeria and unification of the five public services and judicial services. Before Nwokedi's one-man commission, Ironsi had stated in a public appearance at the end of January 1966 that "all Nigerians want an end to regionalism." Thus, after Nwokedi's appointment, the Nigerian Daily Times of 17 February 1966 stated, "... we can now take it for granted that Nigerians have picked a unitary form of government for the Second Republic. May be. But only may be … are we already satisfied that Nigerians necessarily want this (unitary government)?" Ignoring the Nigerian Daily Times question, Ironsi in his national broadcast of 31 March 1966 on the occasion of annual burget stated among other things, "I am convinced that the bulk of our people want a united Nigeria and that they want in future one government and not a multitude of governments."
Nwokedi submitted his one-man commission of enquiry report to Ironsi, recommending a unitary form of government for Nigeria. Based on the recommendation of Francis Nwokedi, Ironsi promulgated Decree No. 34 of 24 May 1966 and in his broadcast to the nation on the same date, he announced that the country ceased to be a federation and instead would thenceforth be a Republic of Nigeria ruled by national military government; the regions were abolished and replaced by groups of provinces ; the Federal and Regional civil services were unified and to be administered from Lagos (then the capital of Nigeria); political and tribal organisations were dissolved and political activities banned for the next two and half years. That was the origin of centralized political power still in operation in Nigeria, today.

Rather, he was, I believe justly accused of the promulgating unitary government. He paid the ultimate price and the surprising thing is that IN PRACTICE what he was killed for was never changed, when the killers had all the power and majority public support to change it-Why?
I doubt that Prof Wole Soyinka said it.
