To: Oliver Owen <oliver.owen@africa.ox.ac.uk>

Dear all,

Hope you are well. Excuse the mass approach. I don't know if some of you have already noted the call for proposals which was circulated on the NTRN mailing list as below. If not, I just wanted to mail personally to underline that this is open to all types of researchers in all disciplines so please do share it internally and externally as we would love to see a broad range of applications, whether single-organisation or collaborative teams, from within Nigeria, from across Africa, and globally. Maybe this is an opportunity to connect some issues that you've been working on, or to explore a new area.

The link is in the text below.  Please do share and consider applying.

regards

Olly

Why Nigeria needs a huge tobacco tax hike to curb smoking

Last year, Nigeria increased the excise tax on cigarettes, but this fell short of bringing meaningful change. Research indicates that targeting an excise tax burden of 75% would result in about a 20% drop in cigarette consumption and an increase of over 100% in government revenue from this source. Laura Rossouw calls on Nigeria to lead the way on tobacco taxation in the West African region.
