| Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to inform you that the deadline for submitting proposals for the Mid-America Alliance for African Studies (MAAAS) Conference has been extended to Monday, August 12, 2019! Proposals, for both papers or full panels, should address this year's theme, "The Narrative of Africa Rising: Real or Fiction." After decades of scholarship about the continent that reflects a sense of 'afro-pessimism’ this theme questions whether recent narratives of liberal economic policies, entrepreneurship and free trade to encourage economic growth and social infrastructural development signal a new era of scholarship on Africa. Scholars should submit a 250-word paper abstract or panel description to maaaspp@gmail.com. Undergraduate students may submit proposals with the endorsement of a faculty mentor. Click here for more information of conference details. Register for the conference. Please take the time to review the following conference opportunities for educators and graduate students. Kenneth P. Lohrentz Graduate Paper Competition Graduate students should consider submitting their work for the Kenneth P. Lohrentz Graduate Paper competition. Awards include one first place award of $100.00 and two honorable mention awards. Click here for details about the award. Students interested in submitting their papers for this award can send them to kasc@ku.edu. Deadline for submission of papers is August 31. Funding for Non-KU Graduate Students to Attend MAAAS Funding of up to $500 is available for non-KU graduate students who want to attend MAAAS.
