Subject: Freedom in Moral Remembrances
Dear Friends & Colleagues,
As we navigate the current crises we face, it's also time to express gratitude to those who have moved on to the life beyond and left us with great legacies and memories.
Three days ago, we lost Prof. Wamba dia Wamba and yesterday we lost Rep. John Lewis & Rev. Cordy Tindell "("C.T.") Vivian who were among the tallest trees in our civil rights ecosystem dreamland.
Sad losses but bestowers of great legacies. Today is also Nelson Mandela's birthday. And, this weekend is also the 172nd anniversary of the first women's rights convention in American history – a convention that protested "the mistreatment of women in social, economic, political, and religious life… and marked the first public meeting calling for women's right to vote."
Freedom, Freedom, Freedom. As Flo Kennedy once said: "Freedom is like taking a bath; you got to keep doing it everyday."
Prof. Ato Quayson's new recording bears on Freedom, and here's a link to it for you to savor: https://youtu.be/Ex9Vm8g6woY
In addition, here's a link to a fitting song by Letta Mbulu, "Amakhamandela" ("Not Yet Uhuru"), to accompany us in our reflective and meditative moments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Js95topeKI
And, finally, attached is a poetic expression by yours truly – a sonnet to freedom, crafted in iambic pentameter. It's attached so that it does not distract attention from the above links. ):
With Peace & Love,
Akwasi
