This series ends today
With "Sobashiya Abazale," I close the series on protest songs in honor of George Floyd and the activism of "Black Lives Matter." Sleep well, George Floyd. Your death has brought changes to the world.
By the end of the 1970s in South Africa, young people had engaged in a very active, militant protest movement. "Sobashiya Abazale," very explicitly called for ways young people could join the action:
"We will leave our parents at home /
We go in and out of foreign countries /
To places our fathers and mothers don't know /
Following freedom we say goodbye, goodbye, goodbye home."
