Subject: USA Africa Dialogue Series - : on Ijebu Ode and the wonderful(?) world of children
Some notes on Ijebu-Ode and the wonderful (?) world of Children by Augustine Togonu-Bickersteth,London,Engl
What is it about Ijebu Ode and the wonderful world of children? Or could it be less than wonderful?
Kabiyesi, Oba Sikiru Adetona was installed as Awujale of Ijebuland on April 2 1960.April 2 became International children's literature day . Following this from Ijebu ode we had nigeria's first woman Professor Adetowun Ogunsheye(nee Banjo) as first President of the International Board of Books for the young,Nigeria Chapter Then we had Emeritus Professor Ayo Banjo as first chairman of LNG PRIZE for children's literature
On June 16 1902, Timothy Adeola Odutola, the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christions was born, June 16 coincidentally, became the international day of the African Child.
August 30 2012, 17 years after the passing away of Adeola Odutola the Adeola Odutola foundation was launched
August 30 1919 marked the birth of Maurice Hilleman the King of Vaccines The Vaccines he developed save millions and millions of lives every year . Maybe I should note here that the a Daughter of Chief Adeola Odutola, Professor Oyin Olurin is the Doyen Of Ophthalmology surgery and some children around the world remain blind for as little as 95 pounds for cataract surgery. My readers please do your research. There is Dr Ben Ajayi, ophthalmologist a.and ex presidents of the opthalmology society of nnigeria based at Alawiye House as used to be owned by the children's writer in Yoruba, papa JF odunjo.. Children are as precious as a mothers eye.! He maintained the column You and I in the tribune newspaper
Succeeding Adeola Odutola is Otunba Subomi Balogun as Asiwaju of Ijebu christians He built and donated the 30 million Dollar ,National Paediatrics center in Ijebu OdE.paediatrics is the medical specialty that attends to children. His Bank FCMB has also lent support to the institute of child health, university college hospital Ibadan.
As if that is not enough,Wole Soyinka who claims to be an Ijegba man that is a mix of ijebu and egba wrote ,Ake the years of Childhood, which became the worlds second best selling work of non fiction. on childhood in nigeria, the news has it by Wole Soyinka in the Guardian August 28 2021 of" successful slave trade of CHILDREN AND SCHOOL PUPILDS going on in Nigeria.
"whats more there is the Tai solarin university of education at ijebu ode named after the self proclaimedd fourth greatest nigerian who at death was described as the patron saint of Nigerian Children,
You should not write about libraries without writing about children and bookshops too.so baba odusote was first president booksellers association of nigeria/ he has a wonderful section on books at hjis bookshop at Oke Bola opposite papa awolowos house, and papa awolowo the benefactor of free education and a bibliophile
Lastly are two iconic librarians, onetime chairperson of the oyo state library board, daughter of a bookseller, professor bimpe aboyade, the first woman in west africa to have a phd in English literature. And the academic librarian Iyalode of iijebu ,omu Chief Laide Soyinka. I rest my case
