Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Tinubu's wife donates N1bn for OAU landscaping

Thank ypu Peter for your courage to stand to establishing integrity in public service and helping us all develope the critical mind to question the status quo.

What is the source of the money is good question.....

One billion naira ($650,000) donation by the first Lady at a time like this in the nation raises questions for citizens who are worried about people in power suddenly becoming billionaires and then turning around to becoming philanthropists.
1. Before Tinubu became Governor in 1999, would the family boasts of such wealth?
2. The other day it was the son, Seyi, donating N500million ($325, 000) in Maiduguri. How did Seyi get such money? What job does he do? If he owns a business, how and when was the business founded and with which funds?
3. Are we congratulating philanthropic acts whose sources of wealth are questionable?
4. The truth is that nobody truly knows the wealth of Tinubu dynasty because the system is not transparent.
5. Whether private or public, the fight against corruption cannot be achieved when public persons lavish so much wealth when the real sources of those wealth are unknown. And then they are celebrated as "charitable"

My dear Egbon MOA,

One billion Nigerian Naira is approximately equivalent to $650,000 at today's exchange rate.

It is a substantial amount of money in any country. We cannot deny that Senator Remi Tinubu and her family likely have this kind of wealth.

Is it a noble act to donate funds to one's alma mater if one has the means? I believe most people would agree.

Is it customary for affluent alums to give back to their schools? Once again, the answer is likely yes.

Can this donation be made discreetly? Yes. Could it later become public knowledge? Probably.

Is there value in publicly announcing such a donation? Probably yes. Universities may appreciate it as it could inspire other alums to do the same.

Is it insensitive to make such donations, considering the poverty in Nigeria? This question is more complex, and I don't have a definite answer.

However, I do know that we often become hypocritical and exaggerate situations.

A wealthy American citizen donating this amount to their former university might not even make the headlines. My point is that it doesn't matter if, how, and when Remi Tinubu makes this donation; she will still face public scrutiny and be blamed nonetheless.

Hmmm, as a Great Ife fellow, I thank the First Lady for the generous donation to my old school. But I don't know what to make of a First Lady, anywhere in the world, parting with one cool billion. I'm really dumbfounded. It is truly scary!
