"History tends to Repeat itself"
OPINION ON RIVERS STATE OF NIGERIA AND THE CURRENT CRISIS
LET'S NOT RETURN TO THE SO-CALLED "WILD, WILD WEST" OF THE 1960S IN WESTERN NIGERIA
I have been following the contemporary troubling political evolutions in River State before the 2023 elections in part because I have a connection to the state. Further, I am concerned because of my current work on Political Parties and Democracy in Africa with a special reference to Nigeria–the Giant of Africa or Crippled Giant: Since Independence (to quote Brother Eghosa Osaghae). This is so because of the mismanagement of her great resources which is really killing us today. It goes with saying that I am not quite happy with what I am seeing in the continent, and particularly in Nigeria. However, I am hopeful that our children and grandchildren shall do much better!
In the meantime, let me suggest that political leaders should consult with our Nigerian academics, and other interested parties, on how to resolve the political imbroglio in Rivers state.
Moreover, let it suffice to say that reading the following works on the political history of Nigeria might be of interest to some on this matter:
Falola and Heaton, A History of Nigeria (2008), pp. 164-172.
Ojo, "Government by Incompatibles: A Case Study of the 1960-1964 Nigerian Federal Government," African Journal of Political Science and International Relations, Vol. 4, No. 9 (2010): 340-349.
AN IMPORTANT ADAGE: It is critical to "BAIL THE WATER WHILE IT'S ANKLE DEEP" in Rivers State.
