Professor and Chair, Department of Criminal Justice

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) invites applications for the founding Department Chair at the rank of Professor, of what will become a combined department of Criminal Justice and Sociology in Fall 2025. It is a full-time, 12-month, tenured position, with a course load of four courses per academic year. The appointment begins July 1, 2025. Candidates must have a terminal degree in either Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Homeland Security and Emergency Management, or a closely related field. While specialization is open, the ideal candidates will be a dynamic leader familiar with the different fields within the department and have a strong commitment to working with students and faculty at a teaching institution that also values research. The college and this new department are committed to building and sustaining an inclusive and equitable working and learning environment for all students, staff, and faculty. We believe every member on our team enriches our diversity by exposing us to a broad range of ways to understand and engage with the world, identify challenges, and to discover, design, and deliver solutions.

We seek an individual with demonstrated evidence of

• academic administrative experience at the departmental or program level,
• strengths in undergraduate and graduate teaching, including online teaching,
• excellence in scholarship and research sufficient to be appointed at the rank of Professor in the department
• a commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion, and
• excellent written and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with
diverse audiences.

The department chair, reporting to the Dean, will have responsibilities including, but not limited to:

•     leading student recruitment and retention efforts
•     communicating and implementing college and university policies to the department, and advocating for departmental needs to the college and university,
•     fostering and maintaining collaborative relationships with external entities, through community partnerships, and at meetings of learned and professional societies,
•     encouraging and supporting engaged teaching, scholarly activity, and professional development within the newly-merged department,
•     planning and executing a strategic direction for the department, building and staffing the
schedule of classes, overseeing the department budget and other resources, mentoring faculty, fostering team building, managing the department and its staff, overseeing advising as necessary, and working with diverse faculty and
students in the department and across campus to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and
•     working with the faculty to develop and review standards, curricula, and procedures that
provide preparation of graduates for professional or further academic endeavors.
