All hats off for Baba Iresi!
Professor Michael Oladejo Afolayan, a distinguished scholar, mentor, and pillar of strength, is celebrating a remarkable milestone—his 70th birthday this week. This moment not only marks the celebration of his academic achievements but also honors the profound and lasting impact he has had on countless lives, especially mine. We are both from Iresi, and our bond goes far beyond geography. His late elder brother, Professor Afolayan, was a dear friend of my late father, further intertwining our families and deepening the connection between us.
Growing up in Oyo, I had the privilege of witnessing the legacy of intellectual excellence that runs through the many professors who emerged from the lineage of their grandfather, whom we can rightfully call Afolayan the First. Professor Michael Oladejo Afolayan's brother, the late Professor Afolayan, was the Rector of the College of Education at Iree, Osun State, where he took my younger brother, Adewale, under his wings. This was more than just an educational opportunity—it was an act of mentorship that completely transformed Adewale's life. Before this intervention, Adewale was not only a rascal but a truant. Today, he stands as a Pastor, a beacon of faith, carrying forth the light of the Gospel. The entire Oladele/Oyeniyi Family from the Aworo-Esile Compound of Iresi will forever be grateful for the role Professor Afolayan played in this life-changing turn of events.
For me, Professor Michael Afolayan has been both a mentor and a father figure. Since our paths crossed several years ago, he has become an unwavering source of wisdom, guidance, and encouragement. His influence has been transformative, shaping my academic journey and personal growth in ways I never could have imagined. His mentorship has also extended into more practical areas of life. Thanks to his encouragement, I not only now have a multi-acre cocoa farm but also a thriving palm plantation—an investment that provides me with financial security and peace of mind as I grow older. Professor Afolayan embodies the true spirit of mentorship—always placing the welfare and growth of others at the heart of his efforts.
On this momentous occasion, we celebrate a man whose life has been devoted to the betterment of others. Professor Afolayan's intellectual contributions, humanitarian work, and tireless commitment to community development have left an indelible mark on the world. His work is a testament to the power of education and mentorship in shaping individuals and transforming entire communities.
Happy 70th birthday, Professor Afolayan. May your legacy continue to inspire and guide future generations for many years to come.
