Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - A major question : How will the tariffs affect Africa?

And so,
finally,
with nothing new under the sun
with regard to tariffs affecting Africa
the fact is that this shit and much worse
has happened more than once before
and this time too
necessity being the mama

Truth never sleeps. Sometimes, what cannot be articulated conventionally has to be "communicated" in quasi esoteric (though I know that the esoteric always somehow some way implicates the exoteric —just as MENSA AIN'T just Latin for "table"; what interests me most in life and at the same time the least valuable to me: philosophy (especially philosophy without numbers). I get HIGH on the abstract AND the possible (the thinkable). I believe in Jesus BUT not in "Christianity" (aka "Christianism"). One can be a theist or an atheist or a deist and still be that human who STILL believes that truth does NOT sleep (and perhaps cannot sleep). If truth can sleep then we can justify ANY evil.

I AIN'T no Socrates, but I cherish his enduring maxim: the only thing I know is that I no nothing.
A dogmatist, especially in its "postmodernist version, "thinks" it (aka "Dasein" in a Heideggerian sense) knows everything  Anyone who claims to know everything has nothing to learn anymore: Dasein becomes a dogmatist.

I remember when I condemned BLM violence in the aftermath of the unwarranted ritual killing of Minnesota's Floyd, at least two overeducated intellectuals called for my expulsion from our group; fortunately, Toyin Falola vetoed the move. It takes COURAGE and HONESTY to be who one is, who one wants to be. I admire any "angel"or even "devil" who demonstrates courage and honesty in crucial times.

I have enjoyed works where courage and honesty appear: such as any Shakespeare piece (mostly his tragedies), any Dostoevsky novels (especially Brothers Karamazov), Achebe's Arrow of God, Bessie Head's A Question of Power, Ayi Kwei Armagh's Fragments, Goethe's Faust, and above all, the Torah and the Bible.

Nietzsche, perhaps the DEEPEST "Western" thinker's work Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None.

Nietzsche, perhaps, one of the greatest thinkers to affirm dogma-free earth. No, he AIN'T into theism or atheism or "agnosticism" or "animism". He earns trophy as one of the most misunderstood thinkers, He ain't a philosopher in a traditional sense; then what is he? —. A wrong question (a logicentric questio) — so don't ask Nietzsche = question; ask a "hermeneutic" question. By the way he has a MULTIPLE style. He tends to think or write aphoristically, metaphorically, etc. if one wants to read him, do so not only in the context of a particular work in question but ALSO read him inter-contextually within the body of his works. To understand Nietzsche meaningfully or rewardingly, read him contextually and inter-contextually (beginning with his first book (The Birth of Tragedy. 1872) and through his magnus opus (Zarathustra) where he focuses on his deepest thought (the eternal return of the same events). Of course, also think through his other seminal works, such as Beyond Good and Evil, On the Genealogy of Morals, and his "non-autobiographical" autobiography. Also be aware and beware of The Will to Power — read it contextually and inter-contextually; yes, his sister married an antisemite,  but note that Nietzsche fought against antisemitism all his life. Note that Nietzsche died relatively young; he died in 1900 — before Hitlerism. Nietzsche broke away from Wagner; he could not stand Wagner's antisemitism.

Getting hungrier and hungrier for lunch (rice ati rice — one of my favorites, though "okoh" lives as my favorite of all.  Best wishes!

I demand the same of you, the same that was demanded by those who approached Jesus (according to John 10: 24 ) and asked him : "Are you the Messiah ? Speak plainly !"

The emphasis here on plainly

Not as in this instance and in some other instances, waxing mysteriously cryptic, poetic, enigmatic (like some passages in the New Testament ) inviting us to conclusions that are therefore inevitably prone to being a little dogmatic

Nice etymology of that last word too, nothing to do with that okuru dog wagging his tail over yonder, in the world of enemies and frenemies, " man's best friend", of course

Once the principles of Animalism are carved in stone, they can be easily violated - sometimes violently, and betrayed by the heretics. You once mentioned Trotsky as your specimen exhibit A, the result of Group-think, you say,  your response to that term perhaps sparked by Chimalum Nwankwo's remarks here  about being favourably compared with Ok-igbo, your favourite Nigerian poet…

But in this matter of Trump and his tariffs since I only have what the BBC describes as kindergarten economics at my fingertips, please demystify . I understand that you could be saying that Trump is the kind of Tigritude TIGER that POUNCES

So Trump has pounced.

You cannot also mean that that changes nothing   for e.g. Nigeria?

When will necessity be the mama of invention? As long as she plays strategically as in chess or as in Omaha poker "things" AIN'T going to "fall apart."

How the tariff war affects your savings – and your finances

When the US imposed 20 percent tariffs on all goods exported from the EU to the US, it wasn't just a political gesture – it could also be the start of a full-scale trade war. And even though Sweden is not at the center of the conflict, Swedish consumers, households and workplaces will be affected.

The Swedish stock market is often affected by global events. Increased risk of a trade war can cause the stock market to decline, especially for export-dependent companies. For those who have funds or shares in their pension savings, this can mean:

● Short-term declines in fund and stock values.

● Increased volatility, i.e. stronger fluctuations.

● Risk of recession and lower future returns.

Frida Bratt, savings economist at Nordnet, believes that there is real concern about how an incipient tariff war will affect private individuals' savings capital and future pensions.

– No one thought that the American tariffs would be this extensive. We have already seen the effects. There is now concern about the consequences this will have for the world economy. Those who have shares and funds must be prepared for chaos on the world's stock markets. There could be talk of continued declines, says Frida Bratt.

How should you think about your savings in this situation?

– If it's about long-term savings for retirement or children, you shouldn't act in a panic. If it's money you need within two years, maybe it shouldn't have been invested in the stock market or in funds in the first place. The stock market is too risky for short-term savings, says Frida Bratt.

In times of turmoil, small currencies like the Swedish krona tend to weaken. But after the US tariff announcement, the krona has strengthened slightly against the dollar. This means that imported American goods – and a holiday trip to New York – have temporarily become cheaper. However, the effect is uncertain and can change quickly depending on how central banks and markets react.

If the krona strengthens in parallel with the introduction of American tariffs, it will have a double impact on the Swedish export industry and could lead to increased unemployment.

Henrik Horn, professor of international economics, believes that an incipient tariff war will hit broadly – and hard.

– Some companies will receive protection against import competition. But they too may be affected by other countries' tariffs. Otherwise, there are only losers, says Henrik Horn.

Donald Trump has presented the tariffs as a blessing for the American economy?

– Incomprehensible to an economist. You probably have to be a psychologist to comment on it, says Henrik Horn.

Since mid-March, the EU has presented a 99-page list of goods that could be subject to new tariffs. The goal is to target both symbolic and economically sensitive US exports – to put pressure where it hurts most politically.

Lars Calmfors, professor of economics, believes that the tariff conflict risks having both short-term and long-term effects.

– We don't know where this will end up. In the short term, it will hit Swedish exports and could lead to a recession. In the long term, we risk slowing down global growth. Trade wars create inefficiency. Wage growth will be negatively affected, says Lars Calmfors.

– The tariffs that the EU is planning will probably be designed to hit Republican voters harder, continues Lars Calmfors.

Facts. Goods that the EU can impose tariffs on...

The products that the EU Commission has previously listed as planned tariff countermeasures include everything from food, beverages, hygiene products, home furnishings, clothing to industrial goods. The following goods could then increase in price for Swedish consumers.

Food, drink: Coffee, Curry, corn, peanuts, peanut butter, meat, chicken liver, crackers, wine, bourbon.

Hygiene products: Shampoo, deodorant, face shield.

Building products: Windows, doors.

Clothing: Leather gloves, ties, compression stockings

Home furnishings: Mattresses, electric grills, umbrella handles.

Industrial goods: Pipes, boat sails, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Tesla, Jeep and Ford
