Professor Moruf Lanrewaju Adelekan to join the Panel Discussion on the Use of Drugs in Africa, February 15, 2026
After completing his housemanship and National Youth Corp programme between 1981and 1983, Professor Adelekan enlisted in the postgraduate training program in Psychiatry at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, and WHO Centre for Research and Training Aro, Abeokuta, from where he obtained two Fellowships (FMCPsych and FWACP) by examination in 1987. He obtained three further degrees in the UK namely (MSc Psychiatry, Manchester) in 1990; Diploma in Psychiatry (Manch) in 1990 and FRCPsych (UK) in 2010.
Professor Adelekan joined the academic staff of the Department of Behavioural Sciences, University of Ilorin as a Lecturer 1 in December 1987. By God's special grace, he rose quickly through the ranks to earn his Professorial Chair in August 1995 at the age of 41.
Professor Adelekan then moved to the United Kingdom in November 2003 where he worked in the National Health Service (NHS) as a Consultant Psychiatrist for 21 years before retiring in August 2024. He then fully relocated back to his hometown Abeokuta to spend his retirement years serving his community. Since January 2025, Professor Adelekan has been serving as Visiting Consultant to Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta as well as Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro.
In the traditional arena, Professor Adelekan has also been very active since returning to Nigeria working very closely with the Kabiyesi Olowu of Owu Kingdom Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola, FNSE, Oluyalo Otileta VII. He was conferred the Chieftancy title of Akingbogun of Owu Kingdom in August 2025. He was made the Chairperson of Odun Omo Olowu annual festival which took place in October 2025.
Professor Adelekan's research focus was on the epidemiology of drug use among youths, also adverse consequences of use, as well as treatment and rehabiltation of users. Most of his research were carried out in secondary schools, community and hospital settings. He has published several papers and technical reports on these subjects. He conducted the first WHO injecting drug use study in Lagos State, Nigeria in year 2000.
Professor Adelekan served as the Technical Adviser on Drugs and HIV, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna, Austria between 2001-2003. This position involved travelling to over 35 countries attending meetings and conferences, as well as developing and supervising projects. Professor Adelekan was one of the two Consultants contracted by UNODC in 2014 to develop the National Drug Control Policy of Nigeria 2014-2018. The latter involved working with multiple stakeholders throughout the country over a 6-month period.
Professor Adelekan is happily married. He is blessed with three beautiful daughters, two of who are Consultant Physicians while the youngest is a 1st Class Mechatronic Engineer. He is also blessed with grandchildren, all doing very well. He thanks the Almighty for these blessings. Professor Adelekan is very passionate about, and well devoted to his religion, Islam.
