The UN Declaration on the Right to Development, endorsed by most countries, states that every person and community has an inalienable right to participate in and benefit from economic, social, cultural, and political development, where all human rights and freedoms are fully realized. But is this right actually being realized? Persistent inequalities and ongoing barriers hinder millions from reaching their developmental potential. This masterclass examines the history of the Right to Development, from its roots in anti-colonial movements and resistance by powerful nations, to current efforts to establish a binding global treaty. It raises a thought-provoking question: if this right truly belongs to "every human person and all peoples," can any nation, regardless of wealth, claim to have fulfilled it?
