President  Goodluck  Jonathan  and  Power.

I do not intend to spend time discussing the issue of zoning or no zoning in today’s Nigeria.  Minabere Ibeleme wrote (PUNCHWISE) with sophistication on this subject on page 12 of SUNDAY PUNCH of Sunday, 11th July 2010.  The answer to his question is implicit in that question.  Therefore, what should concern all progressive Nigerians is to ensure that both the party primaries and main elections to determine who will be sworn in as Nigeria’s President in May 2011 are not hindered by undue considerations.

Power happens to be the one word that is most recurrent in the deliberations of Nigerians today.  It is also one word, which Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan by the Grace of God, His Excellency, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria would have to mull over in the coming days in order to fulfil his destiny in the history of Nigeria.  This is so whether one thinks of power in terms of the energy or force used to drive machinery or produce electricity OR in terms of the control or influence over other people and their actions.  It is also important that the reading public, which constitutes the electorate, should be able to appraise Mr. President’s actions in these regards correctly.

First, let us consider power in terms of the energy or force used to drive machinery or produce electricity.  Without doubt the lack of adequate power supply in this country has been at the root of its low economic growth, even worse than the effect of corruption!  Whoever that solves this setback and guarantees Nigerians the provision of adequate power at all times will become an instant hero.  Most of us expect Present Jonathan to become this hero.  The question, however, is this: Could the President do anything to transform the present epileptic electricity supply to the satisfaction of the ordinary person in this country within the very short time he had?  It is difficult because most of us can only be satisfied when the bulb begins to glow steadily all the time in our homes; ‘as does in America and Europe – and even Ghana!’  As the President himself expressed during his last media talk, the provision of electricity does not respond to wishes and desires, and even actions, in a simple manner like responses given in a question and answer session.  If it were so, we would have seen the same transformation as has been done in the supply of fuel.  The snag here is that transporters have refused to allow commuters enjoy the effects of steady supply of fuel at reduced price that should have translated to reduced transportation fares. The truth is that it does take some time to install the equipment for generating, transmitting and distributing electricity and until the bulbs begin to glow the recipients (us) do not appreciate any explanations given by Government and its agents.  And it is not possible to import electricity the way refined petrol is imported, while working to restore the refineries.  Thus, it may become difficult to be fare in judging the President’s current actions towards improving Nigeria’s electricity supply.  We have suffered long years of deprivation and unfulfilled promises that we all seem to have acquired the impatience of the proverbial tortoise that was to be rescued from the messy pit in which it had long been.  There is need for all to exercise proper patience and encourage President Goodluck Jonathan in his current efforts to improve Nigeria in all sectors, and we shall get what is due us.  Nevertheless, the present Government, even within the short time available to it can take steps to improve the electricity

power situation in the institutional and policy areas.  The over centralization of the agency responsible for generating electricity is not suitable for a country as large and diverse as Nigeria and we all have seen the ineffectiveness.  The empowerment of regional groups to generate electricity and distribute within their catchments independent of, but without excluding, electricity supply from the National Grid is a change in policy that would yield desired results, very quickly.  Many people have decried the policy and actions that led to the disruption and destruction of regional power stations such as Oji and Afam Power Stations!

We may now turn to the other understanding of power; the ability to control and influence other people and their actions.  Here we must distinguish power from authority.  Authority simply defined means: ‘Ability given to somebody; ability to act on behalf of…’  We know that President Jonathan has the authority of his office to do the right things in accordance with the constitution of Nigeria.  Nigerians, through the elections of 2007 and God, from his birth and especially through the events since 2007 have conferred this authority on him.  Now, most people demand that as a show of his commitment to improving the image and economy of Nigeria, the president should exercise this authority and confront head-on the disgraceful and damaging acts of corruption in Nigeria, particularly among the highly placed political class who have direct access to the nations finances and material goods.  Any failure to do so would be interpreted as a sign of betrayal of the public trust.  I do not expect our dear president to do less.  Notwithstanding, I am willing to recognize that he may not be able to do as much as he would want to, or even to the extent of our expectations.  It is only those who have not been involved in the power play of the boardroom or market place, which is frequently grim and mucky, who may not appreciate the viciousness with which evil-minded persons enter the arena.  This occurs at all levels of human engagement.  And these are the persons who contrive to acquire the POWER to do and undo.  They usually enter the arena causing a whirlwind or a cesspool; which could suck the unwary innocent out into oblivion.  The issues in the corruption briefcase are really hot.  Like hot soup Mr. President should lick from the side and gently.  I am not writing to mellow the attitude of Nigerians who loathe corruption!  On the contrary, I am still with all true Nigerians who condemn corruption in the strongest language; in my private actions I abhor corruption with passion.  My sole desire is that faulty expectations do not lead us to judging our God-given President so wrongly that we flush him out before he has had the time to give us the good government he has promised, and which I believe he can give.

The other matter in this is the issue of elections in 2011.  Many persons and groups, especially the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), have expressed opinions and made demands on this topic.  The first step to show that the President is determined to give Nigerians a good election come 2011 is the appointment of Professor Jega as the Chairman of INEC.  Professor Jega achieved fame as National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and did not show any shift in character while being Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK).  There is no reason why Professor Jega would cut his tongue with his hoe as a closing act in his long and hitherto distinguished service to this country by messing up at INEC.  We do not expect that at all.  I am also sure that Professor Jega realises the enormity of the task before him.  Many have called for a total review of, indeed the generation of a totally new Voters Register for the 2011 elections.  This is without doubt a task for Professor Jega.  If he desires to render an honourable service to Nigeria at INEC, as I am sure he does, he needs to discard what now exists as the nation’s voters register and compile a totally new voters register to reflect his character.  The new voters register should be displayed, and corrected appropriately before being used.  There is absolutely no way an election conducted with the existing register can escape genuine complaints.  We are full of praises for the last gubernatorial elections in Anambra State as free and fair!  Those on ground know that there were lots and loads of INEC-initiated, inspired and sustained errors that would have marred that election.  Just imagine; electoral personnel arrived at most polling stations some 4-5 hours late, faulty voters registers that had names of persons who normally would be natives                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  and residents of the northern and western parts of our dear country instead of the respective names of voters from the polling station!  But Anambrarians resolved that enough damage had been done to our image and reputation.  We took in a lot of the mess and those who voted took resolute steps to ensure that our votes were counted and counted in the determination of the result of that election.  We expect a better performance by Professor Jega’s INEC.  This should begin with the preparation of a credible Register of Voters.

Nigerians expect that the Chairman of INEC should be granted adequate funds now to undertake a fresh and comprehensive registration of voters in Nigeria.  It is only through this beginning that the present INEC can hope to contain the machinations of desperate politicians who are already scheming and stage managing to counter Professor Jega’s best intensions and actions.  Above all, we need to remember that no manoeuvring or manipulations by politicians, or any person for that matter, can succeed when the electorate decides that votes cast must be counted and taken into account in determining who rules us.  The result of the gubernatorial election in Anambra State corroborates this statement.

Finally, Nigerians must continue to pray.

Dear Joseph,

I cannot agree with you more that the time is past to consider only President Jonathan's profile.  We should now look at his track record in addition o his profile.  In judging him, however, I would like that we consider the points I had made in an article I sent to SundayPunch for publication.  I hope that widely read News paper will still find it possible to publish this article.  However here it is.  You may share it with the rest as you have these ones.  It is not a matter pf pleasing the President; it is a matter of assisting all to make the best choice for Nigeria.

God bless you.

“”””Tony actually made a valid point: That the time of looking at the profile of President Goodluck Jonathan is gone...now is the time to look at his track record if he intends to run for the presidency. We looked at his profile when he assumed residency at Aso Villa...I even published an article: 'Goodluck Jonathan, the profile of a Gentleman'. But as Mr Eluemunor rightly pointed out, "he has clocked full 100 days in office as full President, unencumbered by no cabal but HIS OWN....President Jonathan's success or failure at the polls should depend on his track record and nothing else".

There is nothing in his write up to warrant the negative statements below or to suggest he is looking for presidential favours. At the time Jonathan was made an acting President and even before then, I strongly disagreed with Mr Eluemunor on the antics of Turai and her cohorts in my conversations with him
....”””Unquote Daniel Elombah

Candidly it is difficult not to support Daniel Elombah’s call on this issue. Tony E is saying people should go beyond Prez Jonathan’s PhD by now and focus on what he has done or can do as the Captain in the leadership of Nigeria. After all, several of us and academicians at home and abroad, have at least partly attributed Nigeria’s woes to the ignorance and poor educational training of the erstwhile leaders. Now we are have MS (Late Pres Yar’Adua) and PhD (Pres Jonathan) holders. Hopefully things should be better planned, monitored and executed. There should be better ACCOUNTABILITY and greater degree of RESPONSIBILITY expected now that the book folks are running the show! Take care. JUI

All these guys shooting off their mouth against Mr Eluemunor...did you actually read what he wrote below. If you did...is it so difficult to understand simple english?
Why must we look negatively at the statement of others without firstly considering their merit? When someone makes a valid statement, acknowledge it even when he is your "enemy".

Tony Eluemunor does it for the money.  He is a political prostitute and a
cowardly mercenary.  Let him bare his flesh in the hope that Jonathan will see
and buy his goods after the payment from Rogue James Onanefe Ibori has dried up.

Some people have no shame!  They are dishonourable and despicable.

Tony shame on you!
