Stolen Artefacts: Benin Monarch pleads for their return
By RAYMOND OSOGBE

BENIN CITY- The Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa has made a passionate plea to all those who are in possession of Benin looted artefacts to return them to the palace.

Oba Erediauwa made the plea yesterday when he received in audience, the Edo State Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism, Ms Elizabeth Jemitola who was in the palace on a fact finding visit.

The Benin Monarch who was responding to a sensitive question raised by the Commissioner regarding Benin stolen artefacts by the British invading forces in 1897, asserted that the struggle to return the artefacts was a continuous one that must always be supported and sustained by the palace and other relevant authorities.

Oba Erediauwa also disclosed that his queens are the only women allowed to hold titles in the kingdom, just as he asserted that the Benin tradition and culture are dynamic.

Our palace correspondent recalls that several Benin artefacts were looted from the Oba's palace and the Benin kingdom during the British expedition in 1897.

Among the celebrated works is the Queen Idia mask head that was the official symbol of FESTAC 77.

He also recalls that the refusal of the British authorities to return the original mask from the British museum for use during FESTAC 77, marked the beginning of the struggle for the return of Benin stolen artifacts.
