By Chidi Anthony Opara
The sun was out
Battling with rain clouds,
Nurses hurried
To and from the labour room,
In the waiting room
Sleep took me into her bosom.
A nurse nudged me
With the doctor's note,
My sleep soaked eyeballs
Starred,
I signed
And the caesarian section
Commenced.
The calendar called that day;
May first nineteen ninety-six.
With protruding nerves
And protesting pocket,
I await doctor's pronouncement,
The wait seemed endless.
Ugonnaya
Wailed from the labour room,
My waiting heart
Whirled with joy,
The wait was worthwhile.
Mother
And the teeny weeny
Were wheeled into the ward,
Mother
In peaceful slumber,
The teeny weeny still wailing.
