Obasanjo Defies Court Order To Launch His Autobiography in Lagos
Indeed, "The only thing needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing"
You know that I am a tribalist and that I'm therefore biased. My bias about Obasanjo goes back some decades now to when my good Yoruba brother Floyd Moseley told me that Obasanjo and I belong to the same clan and tribe. So, I'm biased and my bias has survived Soyinka's Letter to Obasanjo telling him to " Go!", but I don't say good in the Jesus of Nazareth theological sense:" And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God." (King James Version) – and NB. When it comes to Human Rights, Wole Soyinka has very high standards compared to Nebuchadnezzar and his ilk!
Say what you may, at least Olusegun Obasanjo is a brave man. You can credit him with that. He is not a sycophant. Nor is he what the Swedes call a soffliggare as in
"A man of words and not of deeds
Is like a garden full of weeds"
I would like to read his autobiography, hear it all from the horse's mouth. There are certainly heroic features which do not have to amount to boasting, in the first person telling of it and every Pan-Africanist of hope, must be curious, because Olusegun Obasanjo is no ordinary man – he is an extraordinary man when it comes to the several dramatic roles he has played in the history/ journey of Nigeria during some of its most crucial years. One is curious as to how this man of action - a soldier - the one who was rescued from jail and eventually ruled Nigeria and - again to his credit returned Nigeria to civilian rule and in retirement is now studying theology for the best purpose only, "to be able to serve God better" is still very much in the very centre of the political storm that is raging just two months to the presidential elections in Nigeria.
And that's what we all have to do – to serve
Is it not the height of hypocrisy and deceit for anyone to be robbing the country blind, butchering its people – doing all the manner of things that made Prince Hamlet want to commit suicide?
"the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life"
all that and more – en masse to pilgrimage to the banks -
The banks of the Jordan River
and there to say "God Bless Nigeria!"
The positive words are patriotism and nationalism, love for Nigeria, responsibility and accountability. Their opposites are wordshots usually in the arsenal and armoury of the party or parties arrayed in opposition to whatever incumbent government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria: kleptomania, corruption, sycophancy, mismanagement, and misrule...yuki-yuki...
May the Almighty protect Olusegun Obasanjo!
Sincerely
CH
