Thanks a lot, Baba. You always contribute illumination.
I just skimmed the article; I'll digest it more thoroughly later.

Subject: OONI'S CAR?‹Re: Ruminations on Jonathan¹s impending exit

Dear Profs Ogunfolakan and Sonaiya,
When I was at ife, I remember only the Museum at the Ooni's Palace.
And particularly I remember how excited and enchanted I was when I viewed those
Fabulous Ife heads. I saw them again in 2010 at the BM. The same excitement and enchantment and mystery 50 years on. …Indeed I did an ode. (Found it; tis attached)

This little exchange (between you two) reminds me of another tit-bit from past scribblings.

This one from an experience on the High Plains of the American West. North Texas, and Amarillo, to be precise. (See Attached "High Plans" item—and if you're interested only in the directly relevant bit, See the RED marked section and read on).

Twas Remi's mention of the Ooni Aderemi's car—did he not have a gold one?
And the issue of Cultural, and Natural History. Mmmm.

The Curators at Amarillo found themselves in a not dis-similar situation.

Should they give dominant/ 90% pegging to all the wondrous OIL bits and pieces/ equally wondrous Agric Mechanical inventions of genius/ Settler items of a wide and detailed variety/ all relating to the exciting new folk/ Euros of the past 150 years?; while giving only 10% attention to items relating to the several 100 millions/ not to say billions of years preceding these momentous, but very recent events? There was no shortage of palaeo and much earlier fabulous exhibit materials stored away. ...

More challenging still. What about the presence of Man/ Human Folk in all this? In the Amarillo part of the world, there is a strong popular belief amongst Immigrant settlers that man has only been about for 6500 years.

—indigenous folk, of course, find this remarkable, indeed somewhat amusing—"Whatever will the Whiteman come up with next!" (See the wonderful short stories by DH Lawrence when visiting the area in the 1920s) —

And the Museum Directors (and principal benefactors) were averse to the theory that man or anything else might have been present before that date. Those requiring guidance are directed to various Eloquent Evangelical Pastors, all of whom put up a most wondrous performance. My particular favourite as a child was the late Great Oral Roberts. Who for his efforts and loyal support of his followers, built a University in Oklahoma, that carries his name. Indeed, a quick browse and I see it's still going strong, and that it carries a very clear message—"A beautiful campus with an uncompromising Christian belief."  Indeed. …Let Archaeos take care.

What then to do?

Well, the curators had an answer.
I thought it creative and clever.
But read up the Trail item and
You can can make up your own minds.

I might add that Phantom Trail—a lightly written book of my historico/ archaeo travels
In Ancient America, while reasonably well-received in Brit/ Euro, was not popular in America/ Canada. In fact twas subject to a good deal of abuse—one or two bits published. My object was to provide some very basic info About Ancient America—things that no one ever told me anything about when I was a student in Canada—even as an Honours History undergrad. Good idea, I thought, to provide something that might inform and generate the start of awareness that there were folk about on America lands, up to 6000 years ago; and  that they did some most remarkable things.

WRONG. …The guardians of "American Culture" were alert. …FOX News and the emissaries of American Modernity won again. …Nigerians are not the only ones for whom Govt/ Cultural/ Educational Guardians were keen (are they still?) to ensure for ordinary folk that Nigeria history starts yesterday—or maybe the day before? Mrs Thatcher/ Ronnie Reagan/ The Blessed Tony Blair all have had a go at similar tactics. And very effective too.

For instance, In 2000 and Brit Celebration of the Millennium, a National Poll found that the most Significant/ Notable Contributor to Brit Culture over the past 1000 years was …?  …Arkwright? Maybe Stevenson and his engine? Surely Brunel—arguably Brit's greatest engineer/ inventor ever? Maybe Darwin? Or Newton in the top ten?  What of Marlborough? Nelson? Churchill? …Try again. …

In No 1 Position was the wonderful Princess Di. Richard Branson was well up. None of the others got a mention. Except Churchill—though few were sure what he'd done; or indeed in what century.

Enough of my blather.

Twill be interesting duly to learn the outcome of
Display/ Exhibit issues re Natural and Cultural history at
Unife/ OAU.
And is the Ooni's car the Gold one?
Or have I got it wrong?

Back to work.

Best,  Michael v

Thanks for your thought Prof. I don't know if you have a copy of the lecture or not, if not, let me know how best to send a copy to you. Yes, we are Natural History Museum, but by the statue that established the museum, Archaeology/Anthropology is a department in the museum. That means that the museum encompasses culture and cultural studies. You can visit the website of the Peabody Museum in Harvard University and you will appreciate our  museum. It is true that we have in our custody Oba Adesoji Aderemi car which we are yet to display because it needs to be restored. We can not shy away from our responsibility in fulfilling our mandate of preserving our cultural and natural heritage! Which ever comes our way, we will preserve! Our annual lecture,  is to create awareness on the need to preserve and conserve our natural and cultural heritage and I am happy your thought is part of that awareness. Thanks so much we appreciate your thought. Please, I will
appreviate your visit to the museum in the new building

It might be important,
however, to remind the Director and staff of the OAU Museum
of Natural History of their unique position, and that they
not lose sight of the fact that they are a museum of NATURAL
HISTORY, not a museum of culture.
I am told
there are only two of such museums in West Africa: the one
in Ife and another, smaller one in Senegal. Let them be good
examples of what a natural history museum should be. Yes
indeed, Ife is "for learning and culture", but we
must also pursue rigour in our various disciplines.
Chief Odeyemi has already built a small
(cultural) museum for Ife, attached to the Institute of
Cultural Studies. Now, we hear that our museum of natural
history has brought into its premises (though not yet
displayed) the car belonging to the late Ooni of Ife, Oba
Adesoji Aderemi. Really?
There ought to be
no less rigour in this matter than that applied to the
disciplines of genetic engineering or pharmaceutics. We in
the artsy, cultural disciplines must beware of fuzziness.
Just a few thoughts to share.

My Prof.
My view
is that leadership is a process involving the leader, the
follower, and the situation. All Nigerians have a stake in
the situation that we are experiencing. A leader emerge from
the resultant aspirations of the people!  You
managed to get the OAU awards into lime light. I hope it
will interest the society to want to continue to keep our
culture and heritage. Regards,Wasiu
