this article really does make my point about the rhetorical heft of the
term "terrorism." it grounds its defn and justification in the patriot act.
"patriot act," "homeland security," "war on terrorism,"... us, the
normal people and victims; them the madmen and fanatics.
i think if i were living in africa, not assaulted by this language so
frequently, i might not be as sensitive to its import. but i live in a
country where tea-party extremists have a voice and are taken seriously.
they are the ones who deploy the rhetoric of the war on terrorism to
justify war and conquest and american might and extrajudicial killings
constantly. i--we--do not need their rhetoric to give voice to our
indignation and horror at violent acts directed against black people or
anyone else.
in fact, i am in france right now, and have read about the far-right
party in denmark now becoming the power player. our times have seen the
far right gain in most european countries. politics matter to us all.
and the ones most likely to be victimized by these rising rightwing
xenophobic parties are going to be africans and arabs.
