This is the kind of union commitment that will rouse even me, pessimistic and renegade turncoat that i am, to union matter. This is the kind of commitment to public education that BJ and the rest of the old pioneers stood for.

Just got this from our academic union chapter at CCSU, the American Association of University Professors.
I thought I should share these illuminating comments.

CCSU-AAUP members,
Happy Labor Day!!
I hope you are as proud as I am to belong to a labor union today. This is a good time to remember how important unions are and the positive impact they have on the life of all workers, their families, and communities.
Workers in unions have pay that keeps up with inflation. They are healthier than non-unionized workers because of their good work conditions and access to healthcare. They are happier because of paid leave and a secure retirement. They are protected from unjust punishment or dismissal. Unions also contribute to gender and racial equity at work. And unionized workers pump billions of dollars into the economy; with good wages they increase consumer spending, pay more in taxes, and use less government assistance.
Our union also provides some of the conditions necessary for quality public higher education, such as academic freedom, small class sizes, and reassigned time for research, curriculum development, and program direction.
I hope in the future we can protect our union and share its benefits with the wider community. I hope we work with other unions, community groups, and faith-based organization to improve the lives of all workers, provide opportunities for quality public education for all citizens, and promote equity and social justice everywhere.
So, if you are a member of CCSU-AAUP you should be proud on this day. If you are not, please consider signing up and working actively with us to share the union advantage.
Have a great Labor Day,
Louise
