By Chidi Anthony Opara
A treacherous monkey
Lived on this land.
A gullible food vendor
Lived on this land,
Food dangled.
The monkey dashed desperately
At the dangled food.
Three times the monkey dashed,
Three times the dangled food eluded.
The canaries composed a song,
A song of monkey myth,
A myth of integrity.
The gullible food vendor
Swallowed the myth.
The food no longer dangled,
Treacherous monkey
Was served with a plate.
The dish relished,
The plate cleaned with the tongue,
Then,
The treachery began.
A cabal of monkeys
Possessed the plate,
Jeering at the food vendor,
Jeering at the Canaries,
The Canaries recanted.
They composed a new song,
A song of regret.
