You choose to go back to the embassy incident but some may prefer to start at the Trump administration 's repudiation of the Iran nuclear agreement - officially agreed to by President Obama and several Western allies. The Iranians were apparently sticking to the agreement. Things started to go downhill from there.
BTW, If you absolutely had to choose between Assad and ISIS, who would you choose?

This is not Iraq. I condemned invasion of Iraq by Bush in its entirety. The leader of the local Hezbollah you referred to for the embassy ' protest' was also killed in Soleimoni's convoy. It is no protest if it involves violence. It is an attack. The embassy is symbol of American sovereignty It is protected by international law.
Soleimoni has been the overall commander of scores of militias like that local Hezbollah unit across the Middle East for the past twenty years funded by Iran. He is in charge of Irans foreign military operations. The intelligence available to POTUS is not available to you.
Soleimoni is recognized as the most powerful general and power broker in the Middle East influencing wars like the Syrian war and preventing Assad's overthrow
He was on the American side until Trump tightened economic sanctions on Iran. Iran fired the first military salvo in this round of confrontations damaging oil tankers of American allies through militias and attacking America' s military base. Hence low level war has already begun at Iran' instigation. All international observers are asking for is de- escalation of the war.
If POTUS has intelligence Soleimonis is not planning de- escalation but intensification involving loss of lives of American's he will not twiddle his thumbs tiĺl it happens. He will order his military commanders to go into action immediately if speed is of essence as in this case.
Iran could choose a different non violent means to react to the economic sanctions. Violennce begets violence.

thanks.
the reports i have read state Hezbollah did the attack, not Iran and that Iran has denied involvement.
so, how can he be accused of having led the attack and of being caught red handed in connection with it?
going by the detailed Wikipedia account, this attack was not a military action but a mob protest, rampaging in and setting fire to the reception area before the main US embassy and burning two trailers within their reach, in response to the killing of 25 militia by the US in return for the killing of one US contractor, an interesting demonstration of asymmetry in this evil calculus of power.
so, why should a protest by a mob in which no US personnel was attacked or hurt lead to these two high profile assassinations and reported collateral killings?
in terms of plans to 'kill US ambassadors across the Middle East', im sceptical the US would make such preposterous claims in the first place, given that Iran would have nothing to gain from such a crazy action and the country has been maintaining a delicate balancing act in the community of nations in relation to its nuclear power program.
even if the US makes such claims should they be taken seriously?
to what degree should this US action be seen as creative preemptive action in case its enemies are getting ideas of grander destructions than such mob action at the embassy or as bullying over reaction, building on the asymmetric killing of the 25 men that led to the embassy protest attack in the first place?
what is the US doing in Iraq in the first place?
they weakened the nation through sanctions, crippled their security by insisting they destroy their weapons, manufactured a bogus story of weapons of mass destruction which then UN inspector El Baradei debunked, after Iraq had opened its facilities to UN inspectors as US orchestrated pressure was mounted on the country.
then, in defiance of the UN, the US mounted a coalition that went in and attacked the nation and drove its leader into hiding from where he was found hiding in a hole in the ground. his two sons were killed in a shootout with by US troops after being betrayed by the person in whose house they were hiding.
agst the backdrop of these killings priceless artifacts from the country's history as one of the world's most ancient civilizations were looted, members of its intelligentsia assassinated.
after these destructions no weapons of mass destruction were found.
the US then setup a massive embassy in the nation as the once peaceful and prosperous country descended into chaos.
thanks

Sulaimani was believed to be the mastermind.
He was targeted after being caught red handed in the embassy attacks so he would not be able to deny knowledge of it.

Enlightenment campaign efforts should be mounted in northern Nigerian media outlets to let northern Muslims know that America defended itself against an aggressor who had militarily attacked American interests in the past and was returning as part of a military outfit he led to attack the American embassy when America fired back in self defence.

Ongoing protest in Nigeria by northern Muslims against Trumps attack on Iran.
There is tension in the muslim occupied northern part of Nigeria as indigenes protest against the US attack on Iran which led to the death of a popular General.

Some persons have reasoned that this may take perilous effect on the Christians residing In the northern part of Nigeria.
