Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Mubarak Bala arrested for blasphemy!

Dear Messers Chielozona Eze & Michael Afolayan

This  is on the lighter side.

On the gravely serious side and in the name of peace in Nigeria, I only want to say this and then I'm done.

Do you remember the 2002 Miss World Riots in Nigeria?

You may or may not be aware of these important aspects of Islam:

The love of the Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.)

For the Muslim, the importance of Love for the Prophet of Islam ( S.a.w)

and consequently, that the Prophet of Islam's honour has to be defended

As for me, I love all Muslims.

Given the sometimes delicate Christin-Muslim relations and the frequent tensions between these two peoples in the one nation, if it was a free-for-all, that bigots could freely go to the Motor Park in Kano or Sokoto - and in the name of " freedom of speech" should  freely be allowed to express  their unbridled bigotry and islamophobia in Nigerian newspapers  and on National  TV, to curse freely, and  to blaspheme  the Beloved Prophet of Islam ( s.a.w.) with all manner of  vile, evil, libellous, malicious, defamatory, derogatory crusader propaganda, thereby disturbing the peace, would you expect that such a person or persons, if not mentally deranged, should be legally allowed to survive?

Baruch Spinoza  became persona non grata in the synagogues in Amsterdam. There are, have been, and maybe will continue be attack dogs like Ibn Warraq and Robert Spencer, doing their vicious anti-Islam propaganda, but dare they set foot in Saudi Arabia?

There's also some like Israel Shahak, now late, whose devastating critique of Judaism and Israel in his defamatory book Jewish History, Jewish Religion - The Weight of Three Thousand Years did not attract the death penalty,

But now, yes, we're talking about Nigeria and we don't want a religious war on our hands do we?

I read somewhere in the Mubarak Bala debacle that there's nothing about blasphemy or the punishment for blasphemy in the Quran. Well, they had better look again. There's nothing there about the electric chair either.

Mystic Man – was a big hit in Port Harcourt in 1981…

Really? In Nigeria - not in Iran, not in Russia, not in any of those "other"  places? Come on, Cornelius, you couldn't mean this! We  need to speak out against this or start reciting the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust Poem:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Cornelius,

One person's blasphemy is another's eulogy.

Freedom of expression is vital for all and that is why we love your commentary on such a wide range of ideas, from Judaism to Islam and beyond.

So if I say that I don't believe in Judaism, Christianity or Islam,
will you, Cornelius the Wise, burn me at the stakes? Wherein lie the wisdom
and humanism?

Today  it is Bala, but  tomorrow it may be you  - burnt by The Taliban, for expressing affiliation to Judaism.
