CODESRIA Bulletin Online, No. 11, June 2021 is available | | Codesria Bulletin online, N°11, June 2021 Bulletin du CODESRIA en Ligne, N°11, juin, 2021 | | Reading History from the Bottom Up: From Citizen and Subject to Neither Settler Nor Native Ibrahim Abdullah Department of History and African Studies Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone | | Greetings from the Council, CODESRIA Bulletin Online is happy to share with you the first in a series of forthcoming intellectual reactions to Mahmood Mamdani's recent book Neither Settler Nor Native: The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities, (Belknap Press: An Imprint of Harvard University Press, 2020). Authored by Prof. Ibrahim Abdallah, this intervention contextualises Mamdani's recent book in his previous trilogy of Citizen and Subject, When Victims Become Killers and Saviors and Survivors. Prof. Abdallah notes that Mamdani "moved from jettisoning 'How Europe Underdeveloped Africa' as a research problematic to substituting 'How Europe Ruled Africa' as the conceptual anchor in the burgeoning field of global citizenship studies" and, in so doing, wonders how productive this shift has been. Does Ibrahim Abdallah satisfactorily address this, and related, question emanating from Mahmood Mamdani's work? We will be happy to hear from you. Read Codesria Bulletin online, N°11, June 2021 here. The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities, (Belknap Press : An Imprint of Harvard University Press, 2020).
