Soyinka is the author of The Man Died, right? He cannot afford to keep silence in the face of tyranny. MLK, Jr's constant reference to Dante's Inferno will always be relevant, that "the hottest place in hell is reserved for those who in times of moral crises choose to remain in neutrality." Apparently, WS does not want to be thrown into that scourging spot!

this deborah business is really the same. she was visited by a fatwa and killed, just as soyinka had been threatened with death threats for supporting rushdie.

Ken: I remember exactly when it happened, and Soyinka asked what the heck they were waiting for. He said at 70 if he died (or someone murdered him), he would not be mistaken for an abiku (the mysterious born-to-die child). Yep, he is indeed a man of courage!
