By Chidi Anthony Opara
On that day,
On that second day
Of the ninth month
Of that year,
I set out at twilight
In search of money,
Elusive money.
The picture of my pregnant wife
Struggling with a foetus
Forcing its way into the world
At a clinic called Seiyefa in this garden city
Etched on my mind.
The sky opened
Its reservoir of water
And drenched me
As I walked around in this garden city
In search of money.
On that day,
On that second day
Of the ninth month,
I begat a daughter,
The first daughter.
I named the daughter Nne ka,
In gratitude to the mother
Who sold her "George wrappers"
To send me to citadels of learning.
On that day,
On that second day
Of the ninth month
Of that year,
I announced to the world
That nne ka,
That mother is supreme.
