Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - New UK visa exempts Nigerian university graduates. on Punch News.

Human agency argument is difficult to fault. You cannot ask individuals not to take decisions that benefit them.

Collective agency argument is difficult to defend. You cannot but wonder how underdeveloped countries will succeed.

Individual mobility argument is difficult to counter. Human beings are aspirational.

Collective progress argument is difficult to defend: You want nations and identities to make progress.

In many private arguments, I usually lose the debates on those issues, but I learn from them.

Ọ̀gá Iheduru,

The best part of your analysis is the summative "it's our fault." It's deep and brilliant.

We are the one that has refused to clean up our leaking homes. It is tantamount to imposing a fake sense of patriotism or pan-Africanism to ask Nigerians not to make choices that, in their own consideration, will transform their life prospects. We cannot look at the possible consequences and damn the choice.

Nigeria has become a most difficult place to live, well, except for the political elites and the wealthy who wear "patriotism" proudly and condemn those who see opportunities where the rich and the politicians deem opprobrious.

The exodus to the West will continue. People will keep trying to better their lives as they see fit. They are making choices not available to the slaves. Constrained choices, but choices all the same. We can continue our lamentations about slavery and colonialism.

Any time the cunning British are in need of cheap/free labor to shore up their survival, they turn to Africa to poach its best and brightest free labor while African keeps getting trinkets, glass ornaments, alcohol, drugs, and sexually transmitted diseases, etc. This so-called "graduate visa" policy is a more "civilized" version of "the Windrush generation" migration after World War II and, of course, the mother of all depopulation, the enslavement of Africans in the so-called "New World." They'll now get for free the huge cost of training an African doctor, computer scientist, engineer, PhD holder, etc. in a "top-ranked global university," while Africa makes do with the remittances which the migrants (NB. they'll never call them "expatriates; only white people can be expats) will hopefully be sending back to their homeland? Oyinbo is very smart, though. It's our fault!
