USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: [NIgerianWorldForum] Re: [NaijaPolitics] RE: Fashola flags off Lagos Rail Mass Transit project---What Will Constitute Fashola's Legacy!!

Stevek,

Your take is very interesting given that Fashola claims Awo as his model and inspiration. Awolowo's successes were scored in free education, free medical service for the under 18, road networks, farm settlements, sponsorship of cooperative societies, industrial estates, etc. Not only did these facilities and amenities spread over Western Nigeria, from Wasimi to Warri, from Inisa to Onichaugbo, but also folks sneaked in to the West across the boundary to get free education etc.

Fashola is a product of a culture which Awo had dutifully upheld and nurtured. His continuing importance derives, not from self promotion (in fact he wasn't good at that), but from the fact that the good he had done continues to speak for him.

Cheers,

Adeniran Adeboye

Fashola is anything but like Awo.

Unlike Awo, he doesn't work for a hypothetical Yoruba people. He works for the real people he see in front of him; the people of Lagos State and not just Yoruba people in Lagos Satate as Awo did for only Yoruba people in Western State.

Unlike Awo, he is not working to set up a system in Lagos that only he or the AG can control but a good governance system that those who come after him can inherit and improve upon.

Unlike Awo, he is not pre-occupied with his own importance and building a cabal that would make a god out of him but showing everybody that we all have roles to play and no role is more important than the other.

He is like no other befoore him.

I have to agree with you Joe. If anyone is closer to Awo in dedication and execution. This young Governor is it. Like Awo, he does no go to parties (at least that is what people who know him well say). Like Awo, he puts the business of the people first and he works hard at achieving great returns for the patience and the trust which the people have placed on him.

If Lagos State Governor Fashola accomplishes the Lagos Metro-TRAIL his Legacy will be carved on the Rocks of Time!!!

He should QUIT Ship/Boat hotels, Amusement parks and other "show-me" projects that dont support the bottomline and dont take the AVERAGE Lagosian anywhere. Lagosians need regular water supply, road networks, waste/sewer managment systems and educational facilities. Take care. JUI

Fashola flags off Lagos Rail Mass Transit project

The governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, on Monday, flagged off the World Bank-assisted Lagos State Rail Mass Transit project at the Orile tanker terminal on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The project, which is being executed by a Chinese firm, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), has a completion deadline of five years.

Mr. Fashola expressed joy that the project, first conceived by the Second Republic UPN government in the state, had become a reality.

"This project which was attempted 30 years ago but was truncated has finally taken off. "The project when completed will transform rail transportation in the state and bring a lot of relief to the people," said Fashola, who was represented by the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Agency (LAMATA), Dr Tayo Mobereola.

Mr. Fashola promised that the government would ensure that the rail project which started a year ago was completed on schedule.

The Deputy Manager, CCECC, Shi Hongbing, promised that the project would be completed within the stipulated period of five years.

Mr. Hongbing said: "The CCECC Nigeria promises to perform its best for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Project having been tested and found capable in other areas of construction.'' The project's engineering consultant, Robert Searth, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the project, which is in two phases, would require five years to complete because of the elevation of the rail tract from Marina to Orile-Iganmu.

He said that the project, which would cost more than 500 million dollars (N75 billion) would include the construction of a bridge to connect Lagos Island with other parts of the metropolis.

Mr. Searth said that the construction of rail tracks from Iddo to Okokomaiko would take three years to complete while the Iddo-Marina axis would take two years.
