USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: The Theft of a Nation

It's good to believe in the fundamental goodness and honesty of most human beings  - but as to our rationality :

"Aristotle, so far as I know, was the first man to proclaim explicitly that man is a rational animal. His reason for this view was one which does not now seem very impressive…" ( the opening of Bertrand Russell: An Outline of Intellectual Rubbish

In this article about future trends in West Africa's demographics here's evidence of optimistic men making decisions as rational beings :

"A recent continental survey by a South African foundation, for example, found that 73% of young Nigerians expressed an interest in emigrating within the next three years."

It's elections in Denmark and Israel tomorrow, and the changing of the guards is all set to continue as an infinite cycle of Presidential Elections in Nigeria where more often than not truth can be stranger than fiction, almost everything is possible, and with the spate of random kidnapping engulfing the country no one is safe at the moment, elections are slated for the 25th of February, 2023, unless, God forbid, some unknown highway robbers/ gunmen kidnap the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Mahmood Yakubu, and don't spare Presidential hopefuls, Peter Obi, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and their running mates either.

In that case, Mr. President would have no choice but to call in the military and declare a state of emergency…

Russell's Intellectual Rubbish in vile contrast with the sublime:

''Elect me'', he cried. ''Insecurity will become a thing of the past.''

He was elected.

He came to an understanding with terrorists, bandits and kidnappers.

'''I am your man,'' they were made to understand.

''Carry go,'' as it is said in Nigerian pidgin. ''Our time has come''.

''Massacre and occupy, kidnap and ransom, declare your goals from the rooftops, justify them in broad daylight, I will either do nothing or support you in one way or another.

The fools are shackled. Activists bought. Politicians compromised. Everyone else chained by fear. Disunity reigns as different interests cancel each other out. Smile to the keeping places of your treasures gained through blood and pain. I will make it a crime to apprehend you. Your ransom demanding phones will never be traced. The country is yours. Even when your locations are known to all, I will pretend not to know.''

And so it unfolded, years after years, the stupefied ones watching as vampires took over their country.

Yes,

The summary of the Nigerian situation.

How many people will have to be kidnapped or who will have to be kidnapped before this unfortunate situation is brought to end?

It is annoying and scary !!!!

Subject: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Professor Adigun Agbaje: Appreciation Note

*Personal note of appreciation from Prof Adigun Agbaje*

"It's a new day today and I'm happy to be alive. I was released by my kidnappers yesterday evening after spending two nights in the thick forests of Ogun and Oyo states. My mind goes to the five others who are still left with the kidnappers: two young ladies, two young men and a middle aged person. I was shot at in the head during the abduction process. I thank God that the bullet that went through my car's windscreen left only a skin deep wound on my head even though it left a gaping hole in the cap I was wearing. I did not even know about this till Saturday morning when I saw caked blood on my cap.

I am undergoing comprehensive health checks and so it may take some time to thank all my family, including my in-laws, friends and in-laws to my children, my own friends, colleagues and all Nigerians.

For now I want to thank the following former and current Vice Chancellors of the University of Ibadan: Prof Olufemi Bamiro, Prof Isaac Adewole, Prof Idowu Olayinka and Prof Kayode Adebowale, my colleagues at the University of Ibadan and other Universities at home and abroad, current and former students, including Mr Fisayo Soyombo, for their wonderful support and generosity to my family, top government, military, and other security officials. I am quite grateful for all your efforts. You all kept hope alive and ensured that the sensitive negotiations came to a successful end when I regained freedom yesterday evening. As stated earlier, my heart goes to those young female undergraduates, the young men and the middle aged person I left behind with the kidnappers. I may not be reachable now but as soon as I get medical clearance from my doctors, I will be thanking all of you personally."

Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Professor Adigun Agbaje: Appreciation Note

Respected friends -

We have the good Lord to thank on behalf of our colleague; but before raising the serious questions about the depressing state of our Union, I think we need to pray (and work) on getting those five individuals left behind by whatever means necessary. Doing so will not only ensure us there is still hope in humanity, but should relieve Professor Agbaje of an imminent survival guilt.

Just thinking loud.

USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Adigun Agbaje: Released and undergoing medical check up

Our God is too faithful to fail. Blessed be His Holy Name. Many thanks to all who gave out of their means and stood by us during the difficult hours as we laid vigil for the release of our academic father and benefactor, Professor Adigun AB Agbaje. May the Lord answer your prayers in Jesus mighty name 🙏 Congratulations to us all.
