Dr. Dubem Okafor, here looking like a traditional village elder dispensing greetings and advice to visitors, here on the steps of Harvard's Barker Center, no doubt doing a little of the same! Okafor is the President of the Muticultural and Literacy Institute in Reading, Pennsylvania.

This is heartbreaking news. Murder- suicide happens everyday and we always viewed it as a problem foreign to our culture.

Obviously, it is no longer foreign to our community which has been struggling with spousal homicide
for a few years now. This is a new one, and very dangerous too. This should not be allowed to settle in our communities.
Our ancestors had names and proverbs dealing with situations which may lead to spousal homicide and now murder-suicide. To reach that point of no return, an individual mind must be so tormented that it becomes numb to reason.
That is where names like------ Nkiruka, Azuka, Ibezimako, Onyekaozuru, Ndidiamaka, Obimdike, Amauche, Adindu (adikwudo ife/ihe). These names all point to the fact that brighter and better things are in store if life is preserved and that family, friends are there to be leaning posts when life throws heavy obstacles in the way.

When people get to the desperate point of taking a life or lives, endangering their lives after this world whether with God in heaven, or the ancestors, whichever they believe, it makes a lot of sense for people close to them to intervene and help and support and TALK to them, encouraging, not inciting or blaming, or comparing, but reminding that there is life after trouble, be it loss of a loved one through walking away or death or divorce, the world moves on, life goes on, it is not worth losing a life or lives over.

These recent deaths are totally uncalled for, heartbreaking and should serve as an eye opener that more vigilance is needed to help prevent such. It looks like somebody was trying to intervene in this situation, and it was either too late or who knows ?

One of Nigeria's most respected poet and professor of English and Literature, Dubem Okafor is dead.  He died last Sunday in the United States after shooting his wife Cheryl 37.
Chukwudubem Okafor and his wife Cheryl
Reports and calls from the US say Okafor, 64,  cousin to the late poet, Christopher Okigbo apparently distraught his wife had left him a few days earlier, arranged to meet her at his sister's Reading home, Pennsylvania, where he shot her several times and himself once in the head at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.
A small-caliber handgun was found near the bodies, police said. The Berks County coroner declared her death a homicide and his death a suicide.
Chukwudubem A. Okafor, 64, an associate professor of English at Kutztown University, was said to have shot his wife, Cheryl V., 37, who was an artist, several times Sunday afternoon and turned the gun on himself shortly after they arrived separately at the home of his sister, Patricia Ofilin, in the 300 block of Pear Street, investigators said.
