USA Africa Dialogue Series - RE: New updated List-- Oranika's proposals on Zik's statute rehabilitation effort

IBK,
On the basis of the "rare wisdom" you have demonstrated on this debate with Ogonna OMO, I pledge to reconcile my difference with you under the following terms:
1. Henceforth, I will just IGNORE your occasional unprovoked jabs at me; and believe it is due to the stress of Arusha Tanzania Burukutu on you sometimes;
2. For EVERY person that pledes on the Oranika/OMO Zik's list between now and Zik's 106 B'Day (Nov 16), I will add a minimum of $1 to my original pledge of $200 to the Azuoma/Bolaji List (up to a maximum of $100). So with the 4 or 5 names I saw on List 2, I am adding at least $4 or $5 to my original pledge on List Numero Uno (List1)!
3. And the MUSIC OF ZIK PLAYS ON as we dance to the sweet sounds of the melodies and rythms.
Take care. JUI

Mazi IBK,

Your injunctions ( and others of your ilk) at the moment are becoming childish, and I see no wisdom so far coming from it.

Infact, I would say, your pride is blinding your rather sound judgement on this issue. I called upon you to deliver unto 'team 2' Nigeria in good faith that your original contribution was not out of mockery and spite to your so called ndi Igbo in-laws you love to smear. But you turn around and call me 'small cuny' for showing courage in making things right? No wahala, remain Judas, I await my more reliable Yoruba friends.

You are on your Pauline horseback trip to Damascus.  As a Christian, I forgive easily.  What protocol was breached when you who hold the great Zik in contempt now for parochial reasons wish to appropriate him.  Zik is a world, African and Nigerian icon, and I have as much right to him as you.

Think deeply and you will see that the word "Protocol" as you used it here translates into why are you the one who thought of this first, instead of us.  I have tendered the first olive branch to you that if you donate to the first other, I will donate to your second violet option.

Let us start with that move.  I have pledged $100 to the original idea.  I was going to raise it so if you agree to donate to the first other, I will split my increase into two and give half to yours to show you that I have only love for Zik, Igbo, Nigerians, and all humanity, never hatred and jealousy.

I am waiting for you o!  Go slow on the sophistry and be strong on deliverables.  They are set out below:

1.  I will donate X amount to the original first other;
2.  That will trigger my own announcement of my increased pledge that I will split between yours and ours; and
3.  Both fund-raisers can then engage in healthy competition and rivalry all to inure to laud the great Zik's memory.

I hope you get my drift.

IBK

PS:  I have so much love for you Ogonna, that no matter what you write or say, I will embrace you.  The only remaining issue is in your heart - look deep inside and make the right moves.  I am sure you know what I mean.

Mazi IBK,

You tire me sef. It was the same St. Augustine, who supported the scriptures : " let all beings be subservient to authority here on earth. Unto God God's, unto Caesar Caesar's ". Na protocol my brother, not hate. You don't jump into a man's house and demand a make-over with consent and taking stock. You be lawyer sef, you understand these things pass us sef.

No, we are not efulefus, neither do we envy Ms. Anugom-- but as Igbo men and true custodians of it's future, we must use every opportunity to showcase 'the beauty of respecting our dynamic boundaries'--- in other words we no dey do eye service. But I do see that Aluko/Anugom team ARE not quick in 'correcting their ways' even though they have made 'genuine gestures' towards rectifying the present status of ' Ziks Maseleoum Project in Onitsha'.

You claim, superiority in wisdom by age, I concur. So why play tit-4-tat with the 'silly-boy' rather than show your bigger self, as you always claim in your undying, unconditional love. Even, Hesus, the salvation bringer, required of humanity, the junior partner to only 'confess and believe' and the rest is done by Senior partner.

What kind of democracy DO you promote sef, if you wish that we are all pigeon-holed into 'one big Consensus marching-line'? Obviously more people are willing to contribute BUT are offended in the mago-mago way 'things were foisted' on them, they deserve an alternative, hence 'team 2' Nigeria. I don talk am.

My People, umu Nigeria, Oha NdiIgbo,

I greet you ALL. I've waited and listened to the 'voice of the spirit' concerning this very ' complicated issue' that beseeches us-- the Zik Legacy Reatoration Project. Without 'boring' the audience with lengthy words, I call upon 'the Spirit of Fellowship and Justice' as we strectch our hands across the 'crocodile infested Niger' ( As Gen. Afis of the Odua warriors would put it) to meet our family halfway to support this project that started 'prodigally', now returning home. I make this appeal not without 'appeasing' the Spirit of the land and that of our ancestors that have been aggrieved in the manner which the ongoing project was conceived. We call upon the Igwe of Onitsha, Ichie Achebe--- the traditional ruler of the domain under question to appeal and join on our behalf--- We also call upon His excellency Governor Peter Obi to harken to our call. We also appeal to the indigenes of Onitsha and Greater Anambra State to assist us in 'securing the goodwill and security of the people and environment' under which this project would be successfully executed. We also harken to the Federal Government of Nigeria under who's jurisdiction this project naturally belongs to mend their 'unpatriotic ways' in bringing honor to who honor is due, Zik. We also call upon all the professionals and contractors with expertise within the fields of 'Engineering, Architecture, Project Planning, Fine and Appiled Arts, History & Anthropology and Politics' to help direct this project in the right direction with their expertise. Having observed all 'Protocol' Inmove ahead toake my own personal requests for my 'aligned' participation:

--- Automatically, Abimbola Adelakun, my agent 'Jane Bond' join the 'second team' and re-suscribe herself to our foras in show of good faith and spirit of sportwomanship.

--- Viscount Slim a.k.a. Ikechukwu a.k.a Wale immediately defect to the 'second team', as my brother from 'the other mother' and in show off good faith, I offset his 'credit' with a pledge of $200.

--- IBK, my brother-in-battle, make a matching contribution to the second team in show of his undying love to rescue me from 'perdition'.

--- Maazi Odera, forgive not forgetting, as we join the 'second team' to make amends where error had previosly overtaken.

--- My own paddy 'Pope Pius' MUST join the 'second team' to defend us in the advent of 'barrage of intellectual attacks' that will ensue afterwards.

--- Maazi Dominic, automatically comes on board as a member of the steer committee of the second team.

If all of these conditions are met, in addition to my pledge to redeem Viscount Slims 'credit', I will make an additional matching  $200.

And in the spirit of 'Achikota of NaijaPolitics'---

I humbly rest my case.

Dear Paul et al:

In recognition of Paul Oranika's remarkable display of
modern day Solomonic wisdom by the creation of a second
list for the Zik Mausoleum Restoration Project

And in the recognition and admiration of Prof. Bolaji Aluko's desire to donate to
the second list (but for the simple fact that he is already maxed out
on the Anugom/Aluko list).

And in my fervent belief that Paul Oranika's has no 'secessionist'
intention by setting up the second list (Prof. Bolaji Aluko was only joking)

And whereas I do not believe that the second list is only targeted
at "Igbos for Zik)

And whereas I have been considering upgrading my original $100.00 dollar donation
to the Anugom/Aluko list

And whereas I have obtained the necessary permission from the BOSS,

I hereby upgrade my own family's contribution to the entire Zik Mausoleum
Restoration Project to $250 dollars to be divided as follows:

List #1 Anugom/Aluko List an upgrade from $100.00 to $125.00

List #2 Tentatively named Oranika list---$125.00

My hope is that when alll the donations are collected --not only from online participant
but also through appeals to all Nigerian professional and community organization worldwide,
that the two funds will be collapsed into one account and applied to the Zik project.

Some detractors might ask--why so much ink for $250.00? To which I'll say, it's my money;
I worked hard for it--about 10 hrs work after tax.

Bye,

Ola

Ladies and Gentlemen
This issue has been raging on for some time and many of us have not aired our views because of the circumstances under which this issue came to light. Well here are my views on this not to say that it means much or counts more that any other views expressed on this matter already. First the way and manner this effort began is perhaps not the best way to organize a fund raising  effort for rehabilitation work of the mausoleum of "Zik of Africa". But looking through the list one could notice good intentions from men and women of good will who recognized the contributions and significance of Zik to not only Nigeria but to the African continent as a whole. At times good ideas come from strange circumstances.
To all men and women who are doing this out of the goodness of their hearts may I say thank you. As for Bolaji, it has become obvious that his original intention has been taken over by the outpouring of support for the project and hence he upgraded his initial contribution. It is also possible that Bolaji may be genuinely looking for a way to begin addressing his poor PR with Igbo affairs which he often find himself on the side antithetical to Igbo interest, for Bolaji's/Azuoma's effort may I say thank you as well. William Shakespeare argues that "there is no art to read the mind's construction from the face". Many folks are still trying to digest all of this, and are very reluctant to contribute to this effort partly initiated by Bolaji/Azuoma. But with inputs from no other than Mazi Asagwara, with regard to the current status of the Zik's statute, efforts have been diverted to the unfinished Zik's mausoleum.
But we cannot criticize the Bolaji/Azuoma plan for ever, even as we speak the value of the project purse continues to rise. Let me say that this is a project worthy of supporting. Here is a compromise for many of us who do not want to be a part of the Bolaji/Azuoma plan. Let us organize a second committee (I suggest with names like KC Asagwara, Franklin Ogbunweze, Paul Oranika, Nebukadineze, Nwada Chinwe Tony Egbe,  and other volunteers, we need an accountant and lawyer for logistics ) for the purpose of supporting the Zik Mausoleum  work. Debating the merits or lack of it with regard to the first fund raising plan is counter productive. Let us pragmitize our words through action. There is nothing wrong with organizing a second fundraising campaign in support of Zik's mausoleum project, I look forward to hearing from the nominated men and women in the committee and other volunteers.  I therefore start the second list with a donation of $150.
Please add your name to the list,
1. Paul Okechukwu Oranika---$150.00
2. Prof. Franklyne Ogbunweze --100 Euros or $128
3. Prof. K.C. Asagwara -------$150
4. Dr Ola Kassim------------------$125

Totals so far-----------------$528.00

Folks:
Why Bolaji Aluko may have good intentions here, I think through his numerous writings, he has done a lot damage to his reputation amongst the elite Igbo, that whatever he tries now to do would be considered an after thought. I do not know what drove him to go too far through his writings on the Igbo. He appears to HATE the IGBO with unmitigated passion that his attempt to redeem, is seen suspicious from many an Igbo who have read BO's previous writings and comments on the Igbo nation.
Professor BO in my mind, is a fine social crusader. I saw bits and pieces of it during the hey days of the Abacha era - in Washington . We hand-in- hand marched to the Nigerian Embassy building on H Street then where we sang and sang until our voices cracked asking Abacha to go.
That he took that trip to the East in 2006 in the first place tells something most of us do not know about the man BO. How many people from other Nigerian tribes would take off on a solo journey to go see the last resting place of the Great Zik of Africa? How many would take it upon themselves to go visit the B-Veterans at Oji River ? How many have thought it fit to go visit the tomb of Awo, the sage. How many Igbo men have taken a visit to other places of historical importance outside their homeland?
Professor BO go ahead and do what you think should be done. But from now, please begin to tone your rhetorics down on the Igbo people of Nigeria . Let this move begin the healing process We all have a stake in nigeria and we all could salvage her. YES, WE CAN.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
I would like to restate that the notion that once you have criticized Zik or an Igbo person in the past you cannot be an honest partner in today's effort to glorify Zik or empower Ndiigbo in general is FLAWED and unprogressive.
Second, it is IMPORTANT that we understand that there are times when it is appropriate for us to stand on principle against a general attitude or practice and become suspicious about certain things that come with it; an example is colonization; and in that case, we can take steps to question every move potential colonizers make in the form of Greek gifts, friendly gestures etc that could be interpreted as means to a suspicious end. However, the debates and differences we regularly have on the egroups do NOT rise to that level of antipathy or present sufficient threats and basis for a conspiracy theory that will prevent us from doing something good for Nigeria .
If Nigeria goes on well, you could easily find Prince KC and Bolaji serving on the floor of the National Assembly or as ministers in the Executive Presidency, doing all they can to collaborate and interact to move the nation forward; so these egroup debates don’t rise to any significant level of inter-personal differences that would lead to long-term distrust, bitterness and acrimony.
Finally, I bet you that the next time Bolaji is in Prince KC’s neck of wood in Canada , he will look him up and wine/dine with Prince KC. I believe Prince KC will do the same as well. So all these differential outlooks should not be stretched beyond their meaningful boundaries, that is the Cyberspace Njankiri and shakara. Anything more is UNPRODUCTIVE AND UNPROGRESSIVE FOR NIGERIA and her people. Take care. JUI

Greetings KC,

Since your posting, intimating the fora that the statues of Zik were in
fact in full/repaired form, I have consistently read your posts waiting
to note when you would finally ask the question of "why Bolaji Aluko
would even dare to assume control of a project suggested for undertaking
by Azuoma Anugom? After all Azuoma Anugom came up with the idea of
repairing the statue so when did this project become Bolaji's project?

Then, something else worries me about all these development, when did a
friend wail over and mourn the dead more than the family members of the
dead? Why is Bolaji Aluko crying so much louder than the Igbos, after
all Zik was first and foremost Igbo before he became a Nigerian. Besides
the statues are in Igbolands, would Bolaji with his over-vaulting
ambition have allowed an Igbo person to take lead of the suggestion of
an Yoruba woman to repair Awolowo statue? I just do not understand the
posture of the Igbo men on this forum to allow Bolaji Aluko with his
amply demonstrated despise of the Igbos to let him take lead in the
restoration of Zik.

Where is Vin, that cosmopolitan Igbo and his Igbo pride? Where is that
so vociferously proclaimed Igbo pride that is thrown at my face all day,
everyday on this forum? There is just no way Bolaji Aluko would even
dare to do something similar in the RS Ijaw area and I would let him, so
where is the Igbo pride, I ask again? Then, why would the Igbo governors
not recognize the need to have an Igbo lead this project and push Bolaji
aluko to a second tier, even third tier position? where is the Igbo
pride?

Graphic depiction of ancient Igbo nobleman in his burial chamber
(carbon-dated 8th-9th Century AD)

Bolaji,
Bearing a staff of authority is an ancient Igbo cultural practice as
shown in above graphic depiction of an Igbo nobleman. All the
paraphernalia and appurtenances of authority shown in picture were
actually recovered from an archeological site in Igboukwu, Aguata LGA,
Anambra state in early 1960 by Professor Thurstan Shaw and his crew. The
staff impelled in front of the Igbo ancestral nobleman was cast in
bronze and was retrieved intact. The ivory tusks, though degraded, were
still recognizable.
Having a great Igbo leader like Zik to bear a staff of authority, even
if just in form of artwork, is nothing unusual in the authentic Igbo
cultural practice. Perhaps, we need to engage the sculptors of Zik
statues, if they are still around, to explain why they chose the
specific staff designs they used in their work.
I concur entirely with your observations about the lack of
proportionality in Zik’s features as shown in the rehabilitated statue
at the Onira Retreat.
Okenwa.

2. I am troubled by the pitch-fork-like staff in the Inisi Onira
statue. It is similar to what the devil is stated to carry, short of a
middle prong. I EXHALED when I first saw it.

3. The DMGS statue is MAJESTIC - with Zik looking up and forward, but
the Inisi Onira statue looks forlorn, with Zik looking down.

4. Most importantly, indeed the Inisi Onira head is MIS-SHAPEN, out of
proportion with the rest of the body, and the face looks TOO YOUNG for
the full body. Quite frankly, if you ask me, I do not think that the
sculptor did a good job.

But those are just my opinions....and there you have them.

Subject: [WIEF FORUM] The Updates on Zik Statues and Mausoleum with
current pictures

Original Zik statue at DMGS Roundabout

Newer Zik statue at Onira with reattached head

Abandoned Zik Mausoleum exposed to the elements

Umuibe,
In spite of the poor image quality of these recent pictures posted by
Azuoma, a careful observer can easily notice something queer in the
restored Zik statue at Inosi Onira Retreat. The neck looks out of
proportion with rest of the body. The restoration work was mostly in the
neck which, of course, had to be severed when the initial statue at the
location was vandalized by decapitation. Compare the Onira statue with
the original creation standing at the DMGS Roundabout since the early
1960s which was the handiwork of master-sculptor, Prof. Enweonwu.
The question that still needs to be answered is whether the Onira Zik
statue was properly restored close to what it was before being
decapitated. This can only be ascertained by comparing the restored
statue with the original one which was vandalized as far back as 2003.
The restored statue was unveiled by Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred
Achebe, on Monday, January 1, 2007. Almost four years lapsed before the
decapitated statue of the Great Zik was “rebuilt by a prominent
Onitsha philanthropist, Mr. Henry Onukwuba”. The unanswered question
is why did it take this long to amend the vandalized memoriam of
Nigeria ’s first President and Head of State? Who supervised the
restoration work in order to assure that the rehabilitated Zik statue
would not end up being a distortion of the true image of Nigeria ’s
premier leader?
My contention here is not to dispute whether or not Zik’s “statues
have been restored”. My point is that it may be premature to regard
the whole statue saga as now moot. As one would say, it is not over
until it is over. The ambience in which these statutes are displayed as
well as their maintenance schedule are still of major concerns to those
committed to optimal restoration and completion of abandoned Zik
memorials in Onitsha and elsewhere. By the time the mausoleum gets
completed most of the building’s substructure might begin to
disintegrate and crumble due to lengthy exposure to the elements in the
past 14 years.
Let the pledges keep on coming because there is still a whole lot of
work that lies ahead…..
Okenwa.

Subject: NIDOA | The Updates on Zik Statues and Mausoleum with current
pictures
Dear All,
As promised I called Onitsha and my contact got a photographer to take
the pictures of the current state of Zik statues both at DMGS and Inosi
Onira Retreat and the mausoleum. Here are the pictures with dates and
the name of the photographer. He took the liberty to decorate the
borders but aside the flowery borders you can see the pictures clearly.

As you can see these pictures were taken on August 17, 2010. The
statues have been restored and we have two statues both at DMGS and
Inosi Onira Retreat which the photographer dubbed Roundabout. However,
the mausoleum is still uncompleted. So, for full disclosure purposes,
the fund raising is for the mausoleum only--as the other issue is now
moot.
We don't know the estimate for the completion yet and we have formed a
committee which will look into the modality of tackling this project. I
will be calling a meeting of the Comittee members for this Saturday. I
will be sending out an email to all the people that pledged so that you
can participate and/or join this committee if you so wish. I believe in
doing everything worth doing properly. One of the things we discussed is
forming a non profit organization that will carry out this project as
well as keep the vision of Zik (democracy and pan Nigerianism) alive.
So, I thank you for rising to the call of duty and I'd crave your
indulgence to join us in keeping this vision alive. Let's this not be a
mere knee jerk reaction, let this be the beginning of a great movement
in Nigeria . Like I shared with some folks, if we succeed in galvanizing
the government to complete this mausoleum then we have accomplished a
lot indeed.

I shall be back with more comments. Thanks and God's bless.
