=======================
The Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, Virginia will officially dedicate its West African Farm, a.k.a. Igbo Farm Village, at 9:00AM on September 18, 2010 in a public ceremony. This marks the culmination of years of research, planning, and hard physical labor by Museum staff, consultants and volunteers. The West African Farm is an outdoor exhibit that is modeled after the compound of an Igbo yam farmer in the 1700s, and is taking its place among the Museum's collection of outdoor exhibits representing life in seventeenth and eighteenth century England, Ireland and Germany, and early America. West African Farm will serve as a place where Museum visitors will learn about the lives and culture of the African ancestors of African Americans, and the contributions of Africans and African Americans to the creation of the United States and of a distinctive American culture.
The Museum has enjoyed the enthusiastic support of many people in the planning and building of this one of kind exhibit. Igbo communities in the United States have been especially supportive in recent years and have given generously of their time and resources to move the project forward to completion. Over the course of the last two summers, volunteers have come to the Museum to work from communities in the Washington Metropolitan area, Chicago, Nashville, Bowling Green, KY, Atlanta as well as California and Florida. The dedication ceremony on September 18 is planned, in part, as time to recognize their work and thank them for their support.
