USA Africa Dialogue Series - New Book - PERSPECTIVES ON THE LEGISLATURE IN THE GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA

PERSPECTIVES ON THE LEGISLATURE IN THE GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA is a
collection of critical essays written
by scholars and observers of the workings and performance of the
legislature as a leading institution
of democratic governance in Africa's largest democracy, the Federal
Republic of Nigeria. The
legislative institutions in Nigeria and other parts of Africa have
been subjected to vicissitudes
attendant to the myriads of challenges of nation- building and
development that engulfed many postcolonial
states, keeping them permanently in limbo and often in abeyance, for
which reason they had
suffered scholarly neglect and obscurity. This collection of essays is
part of the renewed attempt to
redirect attention to the study of the legislature, a renewal
occasioned by the global resurgence of
democracy which has continued to blossom in various parts of Africa
after decades of authoritarian
rule. It is a multi-perspective work that beams search light on
various parts of the traditions and
developments, powers and functions, workings and processes, as well as
the problems and challenges
of an institution that would remain central to any assessment of
democracy and democratic
consolidation in Nigeria in particular and Africa as a whole.
