USA Africa Dialogue Series - RE: 2011--Ready, Set, GO_- DECLARATION OF INTENT: For 2011 Presidential Race - by incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan

Dr Kassim! Dr Ola Kassim!!! Dr Kassim!!

In other words, even after you suggested that "President Jonathan's announcement of his intent to run for the Presidency

(i.e. keep his present job) was well crafted, even if lacking in salient specific achievements that could have delineated his short tenure from Yar'adua's prior do nothing tenure", do you still believe Nigeria can use "sleek Willy" leaders who don't talk straight and frankly to key deliverables to move the nation forward meaningfully at 50 years post Independence?

At least most of us in the Diaspora have options, and so "we MUST be prepared to call a spade a spade on the vital issues of Nigeria", especially the erstwhile leadership ineptitude and non-performance that has stagnated the nation in all fronts and sectors. Take care. JUI

Bolaji et al:

I believe the era of intelligent leadership has arrived in Nigeria, even after

so many decades.

President Jonathan's announcement of his intent to run for the Presidency

(i.e. keep his present job) was well crafted, even if lacking in salient
specific achievements that could have delineated his short tenure
from Yar'adua's prior do nothing tenure.

The omission of any mention of the PDP in President Jonathan's declaration
 was probably also intentional.
The President has decided to subtly 'distance' himself from the PDP.
He is positioning himself

as the most qualified Nigerian for the current and future  leadership of

the country. He is not the President of the PDP but of all Nigerians,

even if he would likely run on under the ticket of the PDP.

Barring all odds, he would likely emerge as the PDP's flag bearer. However,

if the corrupt PDP chieftains decide to shoot themselves in the foot

by rejecting his candidacy (on the alter of zoning), President Jonathan

will be free to run under any other party's banner that he might choose.

He might even decide to run as an independent candidate.

Regardless of which party's banners he flies or if he decides to run as

an independent, President Jonathan remains the odds on favorite

to win the 2011 Presidential elections:

Why?

1) Nigeria needs continuity and stability in her polity now and in the immediate future.

2) Going by academic qualifications alone (which is not necessarily translate to leadership
acumen), President Jonathan is one of the most qualified of all the known aspiring candidates,

both formally declared and undeclared.

3) He does not carry the military baggage, thus giving Nigerians a clean break

from the era of military or pseudo-Military rule.

4) If he picks a complimentary candidate (e.g. Ribadu, el Rufai etc.) as his

running mate, I believe the President would easily score an home run, as his

acceptability across the ethnic, demographic and geographic divides

becomes broader. However, it also possible that Ribadu will declare
for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

5) President Jonathan has the advantage of incumbency; one that he could

lawfully milk to his advantage.

6) I like his new mantra--"Promise Less; Deliver More"--this will likely

resonate better than any other credo his opponents could ever come up with.

How does President Jonathan compare with his possible opponents?

7) I like Buhari and I believe he would be a competent President
if elected for Nigeria

and Nigerians. Unfortunately, his time is now gone; Nigeria

needs a complete break from the military era and it is time to hand over governance

of Nigeria to younger and better educated generation.

8) IBB's campiagn is a non-starter. He will spend billions of Naira on his campaign but in the end

he will come up short. He can only run on his record; and the record has an odorous smell

that Nigerians are unlikely to forget or forgive soon. The possible choice of Peter Odili as his running mate

would certainly put the lid on the coffin of his candidacy.

9) Atiku----Too late; we have moved on.

10 Gussau has a military background. Sorry O:, we have moved on.

11) Neither Ribadu, nor el Rufai should in my on opinion run as the

flag bearer of any party in 2011. As VP yes--but not as a Presidential candidates.

Nigeria needs these proven young people for hands on 'technocratic' work

rather than occupying the office of the Presidency at this time.

12): Gov. Shekarau of the ANPP---Please run, run, run for the Presidency in 2011.

You are a good and competent leader who will possibly give PDP a run for its money.

 13) Donald Duke: I liked you a lot until I read your confession about how elections are rigged

in Nigeria. This numbing confession will remain your salient contribution to the Nigerian electoral system for

the next few decades.

14) Bukola Saraki--stop waiting your time; you will never be acceptable as a minority Northern
Nigerian in the PDP's quest to maintain zoning.

15) Pat Utomi--a knowledgeable and qualified candidate--but I doubt if 2011 is your year.

16) Orji Kalu--Sorry O; I doubt if you can ever recover from OBJ's sucker punch!

16) Prof. Soyinka--Sorry O. Activists do not always make good leaders; they are for once easily distracted
and are too idealistic for governance. Too old. And most important limitation--where is the money
going to come from, knowing fully well as we trust that you will never accept illegally acquired funds for your campaign.

17) Momodu--Sorry O--you will likely be an also ran in 2011, even though

you have prospects for the 2015 and beyond.

18) This space and subsequent ones are reserved for potential candidates who are still mulling the decision
to declare or not to declare--including Diaspora presidential candidates--like Dominic Ogbonna who keeps on tantalizing
us with the possibility of entering politics, regardless of at which level..

Where do the above permutations leave the SNG (Save Nigeria Group). It should remain
what it ideally should be ---a Thinktank-- in which Nigerians of conscience from all political realms, civil society
groups, private sector organizations and individuals can dialogue n ways to move Nigeria forward.

Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)--As things stand, ACN will be lucky to hold on to Lagos and Edo states post 2011 elections--but surprises can and do happen,
What if Ribadu declares for and wins the Presidential ticket for the ACN and he succeeds like Obama in mobilizing
hundreds of millions of Nigerian youths to vote for him--using Obama like strategies--then that will really be something to behold!

The above are my predictions post 2011 and are predicated on the desirability and possibility that the 2011 will be generally fee and fair.
I am not expecting perfection--but with a budget of 87 billion Naira--INEC has no excuse not to deliver.

Bye,

Ola

Dear All:

QUOTE

I Goodluck Ebele Jonathan by the grace of God hereby offer myself and my services to the Nigerian people as a candidate for the office of President in the forth coming 2011 elections.....I will by the special grace of God be making a formal declaration to this effect at the Eagle's Square, Abuja, on Saturday 18 September 2011.

UNQUOTE

Should  this not be merely a declaration as candidate for PDP primary presidential contest?

Inquiring minds want to know, because the announcement makes no mention of the PDP, and its presumptiousness therefore is pretty amazing.

My Declaration Of Intent For The 2011 Presidential Race By Goodluck Jonathan

Posted: September 15, 2010 - 11:19

Dear compatriots, four months ago, providence placed me at the leadership of our dear country, following the untimely death of our dear former President, my brother and leader, President Umaru Musa Yar'adua.

It was a very solemn and trying moment for me personally and for the country as a whole. My immediate task and priority was and still remains to give the nation purposeful leadership and to focus on the priorities of our administration in order to maintain national peace and stability and pursue our key development priorities. In these few months as leader of the country, I have concentrated on managing the affairs of the nation, and resisted all efforts to respond to the drums of partisan politics which have been sounding very loud across the land. As President and leader of government, I decided not to place partisan politics above the immediate needs and priorities of our people. I came under intense pressure to make a declaration concerning my political future, but declined to do so because that would have immediately distracted us from all the development initiatives we have accomplished so far. I therefore told Nigerians to give me time to concentrate on my work and that at the appropriate time I would make a public statement on my political future after due consultations with all the segments and leaders of our nation.

Today, I confirm that after wide and thorough consultations spanning the six geo-political zones that make up Nigeria, with members of my family, my party, the opposition, civil society, the Private Sector, members of the Labour Unions, religious leaders, youths and student groups and our revered traditional institutions, I Goodluck Ebele Jonathan by the grace of God hereby offer myself and my services to the Nigerian people as a candidate for the office of President in the forth coming 2011 elections. In presenting myself for service, I make no pretense that I have a magic wand that will solve all of Nigeria's problems or that I am the most intelligent Nigerian. Far from it. What I do promise is this – If I am elected President in 2011, I will make a covenant with you the Nigerian people to always do right by you, to tell you the truth at all times, to carry you along and most importantly to listen to you, fellow citizens in our communities and also those of you on this page. I do not want to win your affections by giving you promises of things I would do in the future which others before me have given and which have largely been unfulfilled. Rather, I would want you to judge me by my records. Since God Almighty and yourselves permitted me to serve you in the present capacity, I have busied myself with setting Nigeria on the path of peace and progress.

My team and I made no promises on adequate fuel supply in Nigeria. We simply did what was expected of those who govern, we delivered it, and you are living witnesses to that. We made no promise to revamp the textile industry. We delivered a bailout package worth 150 billion naira that is being dispensed as I write. We made no promises of securing the highest U.S Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aviation clearance, the Category 1 Certificate which enables Nigerian registered airlines to fly to ANY U.S city. We delivered. We made no promise to give Nigeria a brand new INEC under a proven God-fearing and incorruptible leader. We placed Nigeria first and delivered. We made no promises of protecting your loans, deposits and investments in the banking industry over and beyond what is covered under the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Scheme. We delivered it via AMCON. Rather than tell you what we could do to improve power, this administration demonstrated it by initiating a brand new national Super Grid as well as launching a concrete Road Map to the Power Sector with realistic goals tied to realistic dates. I understand from some of your mails that there has been some small improvements in electricity supply in some communities. We met an economy that was beginning to slow due to the global recession. Today, the economy has verifiably grown by 7% this half year ending in June.

I know you are tired of empty promises, so I will make only one promise to you today. The only promise I make to you my friends, fellow citizens and Nigeria, is to promise LESS and deliver MORE if I am elected. I call on you to join me to work together in harmony and synergy to forge a nation where we understand our differences instead of pretending they do not exist and work towards a perfect union founded on transparency, equity and justice. A nation that is on her way to repairing her International reputation and project to the world that things have changed and the people of Nigeria have now taken Nigeria back from a few into the hands of her people who are eager, very eager to pull her weight in the forward movement of the African continent and the world in the pursuit of peace, prosperity and happiness.

I will by the special grace of God be making a formal declaration to this effect at the Eagle's Square, Abuja, on Saturday 18 September 2011.

I call on you my friends on this page and all Nigerians to give me your support and prayers so that together we can liberate our country from the confines and self –inflicted wounds and limitations of the past. My dear friends and fellow citizens, to borrow an often used slogan by our youths, please join me in proclaiming: Forward Ever, Backward Never! Please let us all unite across tongue and creed to move our long suffering nation forward together. I thank you and may God bless our country Nigeria
