You appear to believe that when nations are forged from resident ethnic groups, a melting pot is IMPOSSIBLE; however, you believe that even if multi-ethnic conquerors sack a resident ethnic group, the conquerors (even while heterogeneous) can establish a mono-cultural nation in place of the conquered ethnic nation. First, you will realize that the scenarios appear to be non-persuasive, especially as they are contradictory in some respects; second, your point appears to imply that Africans from different ethnic backgrounds can conquer other lands and build or establish monocultural, monolingual peoples nations in their places; I am sure you don’t believe that yourself, except I am dreaming here! Third, it is clear that it is the vision and management and leadership performance people exhibit in their ethnic domains that they can extend to foreign lands that are conquered. The European and Asian nations that have conquered and restructured or build unique societies in other lands are VERY SUCCESSFUL in their own ethnic nationalities. However, besides the pockets of Kingdoms of the past, essentially no African society functions well! Check them all out, from small, near mono-ethnic Dahomey/Benin Republic, Gambia et cetera to the multi-ethnic Nigerian nation. South Africa is yielding a breath of fresh air because of the demographic composition, with the multi-ethnic Oyibos providing the hope. This is the reality of Africa and it is really SAD! Besides, the future of mono-ethnic nationality in Africa can be glimpsed from the local leadership in African nations with multiple regions or States. In fact, beside other benefits of independent State/provincial governments, the local leaderships (even those that are essentially mono-ethnic) have not really provided any compelling proof that if the provinces are left alone as ethnic nations, they would fare better; it is the same greed, misrule, visionlesness and ineptitude that characterize the ranks and file of local governance as with the national. So where is the compelling argument for ethnic nationality as a viable societal organization for African development? NADA!

Finally, we really have to come to term with the socio-biological reality of the African live that he/she MUST GROW OUT OF in order to make progress and not just follow-follow and get wiped out culturally in due course: Our surrender to NATURE is one major yoke Africans still bear, and that is why they are still at the mercy of nature, wallow in superstitions and why they can’t calve their destiny from their God-inspired rational visions and practical labors, rather than rely on primordial ethnic and bestial blood lines for living clues. I think this is a very wrong question.  It baits the peoples of Nigeria to continue to try what no other peoples on our planet have done.  We can build a modern state out of Nigeria if we choose to respect the peoples. Where else on our planet [outside] do we have a people embrace a governance structure whose language (in our case, English) is barely understood and only by an elite minority; whose laws are nearly acultural and whose rulers tend to be more of DEALERS on their individual behalf rather than LEADERS of the peoples, for social stability and economic progress?

 

Yes bro Joe, you and I are here precisely because home had become difficult. Let me assure you however that if Nigeria had kept its federal structure and the relative autonomy that the federating units enjoyed, there would have been so much progress that much fewer of us would have chosen to settle on foreign strands. This is not a chicken and egg issue either. I was an eyewitness to the progress that competition among truly autonomous federating units engendered in the 1950's and early 60's. The sky appeared to be the limit.

OK. I salute him for embracing his Edo-ness and might even recommend him to the Oba of Benin for a chieftaincy title, especially one relevant to scientific achievement. JUI must however begin to admit that our ethnic nationalities have been ours for centuries while our Nigerian citizenship is only 50 years old. Since JUI is also religious, he might agree that GOD created the Yoruba, Edo, Igbo, Ibibio, Hausa, Fulani, Nupe and other nationalities like those, but it was Luggard and the Brits that created the Nigerian jurisdiction. Why should what GOD created become subordinate to Oyinbo creation?

To borrow these huge sums from the capital market in a country where interest rates are in double digits on the one hand, while on the other, in a supposedly civil service state with no sustainable revenue base is 'voodoo economics'. My brother JUI these amounts would have to be paid back and we can only look at past mistakes to correct or guard against future mistakes and not to allow past mistakes be a justification for future ones.   My brother, I beg of you that if at all in future you want to defend the action of the Governor do so with a robust and rational argument rather than the arguments you have tendered below that rather ridicules the Governor and his government. For example, I'm quite happy to accept if you had said that there is nothing wrong from the government borrowing from the capital market to invest in growth inducing infrastructure and services from which accrued revenue could pay the interest and the capital over the life-cycle of the project. The party said it is prepared to meet the PDP in court. The state had, last week, sought the approval of the House of Assembly to secure the bond for development of facilities in the state. PDP Chairman Dan Orbih said the party would use legal means to stop the ACN-led government from securing the bond.  His words: "We in the PDP are going to court to stop Oshiomhole from going to the capital market.  "It is our responsibility to rise up to the challenge of good government. "We will not allow Oshiomhole to mortgage the state's future. Enough is enough."  ACN Chairman Tony Omoaghe, in a statement by his media assistant, Mr. Ebenezer Williams, said the bond would be used to make Edo State first among all states. Omoaghe described Orbih's statement as a ruse and blackmail. He said the PDP had seen the development projects of the ACN administration in the state.
