Ladies and Gentlemen:
I would like to commend Dr Paul Oranika for engaging the Anambra State Government and possibly getting a “commitment” that the State Govt will work on Zik’s Mausoleum in time for the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of Nigerian independence this coming October. While the State Govt’s pledge is appreciated, it must be understood that:
1. The maintenance and up-keep of Zik’s Mausoleum requires more than a “one-event assignment” commitment; a pledge for “a verifiable commitment to continued maintenance and up-keep of Zik’s Mausoleum” would have been more satisfactory and sufficiently compelling to make free citizens who honor Zik to discontinue a voluntary drive to maintain Zik’s Mausoleum.
2. The “sudden interest” of Anambra State Govt to “work on Zik’s Mausoleum in time for the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of Nigerian independence this coming October” just as some Diasporans are on a crusade to establish a Foundation to Advocate and cater to its maintenance/up-keep is truly spooky; the observation is made on the background of the existential realities of maintenance culture in Nigeria.
3. It important for the Anambra State Govt and other Nigerian stakeholders to realize that “Nigerian Diasporans are equal opportunity stakeholders” in Zik’s and Nigerian affairs. So efforts should be made to accommodate the resources, expertise and insights they will contribute to this project to achieve Long-term Success in HONORING ZIK for whom the Greatest Honor is due in Nigeria! Take care. Joe Igietseme

The matter would be discussed in future Anambra State Executive Council meetings. We were assured that the Anambra State Government would do all it could to complete the Mausoleum work in time for the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of Nigerian independence this coming October. We started this project because it was clear from available information that the mausoleum for the great son of Africa, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was unfinished. We were also aware that the news generated through this effort, in addition to the one before it, may result in positive action by either the Anambra State Government or the Federal Government of Nigeria to complete this vital work to honor one of the founding members of independence movements in not only Nigeria but also in the larger African continent. It appears that indeed such goal has been met. By design we asked that pledge redemption should be delayed so as to communicate and consult with Anambra State Government with regards to our plans. As of today, September 21st, 2010 no pledges have been redeemed, and in light of the assurances from the Anambra State Government that this project would be completed soon, we are calling this effort off. We thank everyone who pledged to contribute to this effort. We will continue to monitor the developments of the mausoleum work and hope and pray that this project is completed soon in time for the golden jubilee anniversary of Nigerian independence.
