USA Africa Dialogue Series - Inside Sistine Chapel (Poem)

Clad in black robes
And red sashes,
Cardinals
Inside Sistine chapel converged,
Guards on guard.
Chapel with candlelight,
With paintings of prodigies
Illuminated,
With piety painted.
Conclave convened
Amid grams of gold,
Ounces of other ornaments
And artifacts from afar,
Amid equities
Acquired with energies
Of unpaid labours
To proclaim new pontiff.
Conclave commenced,
Cassocks cast aside,
Cloaks of conspiracy worn.
The congregation converged
And gazed at the chimney
To watch smoke,
White or black smoke.
White,
Herald of news of new papacy.
Black,
News of no new papacy.
