1st September

 

*Independent National Electoral Commissions (INEC) said elections would hold in six states despite the re-run elections in those states due to electoral disputes of the 2007 elections.  The states include Adamawa, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Cross River , Kogi and Sokoto.

 

2nd September

 

*Irate youths numbering about 800 armed with dangerous weapons in Maiduguri, Borno State in a 45-minute raid, attacked Maiduguri Central Stores, forcefully carting away bags of rice and sugar procured by the state government at about N525 million for distribution to politicians, religious groups and the less privileged during the Ramadan fast. 

 

*After about seven months of rigorous exercise, Governing Council of the University of Ibadan named Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole as the next Vice Chancellor of the institution.

 

3rd September

 

*Outgoing National Chairman of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Edwin Ume-Ezeoke accused Kano State governor and the party's Presidential aspirant, Ibrahim Shekarau of being the brain behind the crisis rocking the party.

 

4th September

 

*Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State tendered public apology over alleged manhandling of Rev. Father Eustace Okorie of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese by security operatives attached to his convoy. 

 

*Niger-Delta leader, Edwin Clark at a rally in Warri, Delta State said the people of Delta State have decided to back Goodluck Joathan in 2011 Presidential elections.

 

5th September

 

*Civil society groups marked the first anniversary of the demise of legal luminary and human rights activist, Gani Fawehinmi in a ceremony in Lagos where a statue and garden were dedicated in his honour.

 

6th September

 

*It was drama in Ogun State House of Assembly as 11 members of the House at about 7am suspended 14 other members and hurriedly impeached the Speaker, Tunji Egbetokun, replacing him with Emmanuel Soyemi Coker.

 

*Anti graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions stormed Jigawa State , North West Nigeria , whisking away five government officials including the States' Commissioners of Works, Local Government and the Accountant General for questioning over alleged N15 billion frauds.

 

7th September

 

*The Federal Government came up with the update on rampaging scourge of cholera epidemic in parts of the North, saying 13,000 people have been infected while 781 lives have been lost to the epidemic.

 

*Independent National Electoral Commissions released the timetable for the general elections, fixing the Presidential election for 22nd January 2011.

 

*Islamic sect, Boko Haram unleashed terror on Bauchi State attacking the Bauchi Central Prisons killing a soldier, a police officer and two other civilians, leaving several others with degrees of injuries. 732 prisoners escaped from the prisons during the attack.

 

*President Godluck Jonathan announced to governors elected on the platform of his Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja his intention to contest the Presidency in 2011.

 

8th September

 

*The President announced a list of new Service Chiefs.  Major General Onyeabo Azubuike Ihejirika was named the new Chief of Army Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, new Chief of Defenece Staff, Rear Admiral O. S. Ibrahim, Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshal M. D. Umar, Chief of Air Staff and Afiz Abubakar Ringim is now to serve as Inspector General of Police.  Ihejirika however made history as the first Army officer from the South Eastern Nigeria to lead the Nigerian Army in 44 years.  The President also appointed a governor from each of the geo-political zones to serve as his campaign coordinators.

 

9th September

 

*It was public holiday across Nigeria as Moslems in the country joined their counterparts worldwide to mark the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.

 

10th September

 

*The public holiday continued as President Jonathan in a congratulatory message to Nigerian Moslems urged them to intensify prayers for the peace and economic development of the nation.

 

11th September

 

 

*Chairman of Daar Communications plc., and Director-General of Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organisation, Raymond Dokpesi in Abuja accused the Presidency, three Federal Ministers and leader of South-South Forum, Edwin Clark and other leaders of the Forum of plotting to kill him.

 

12th September

 

*Hope of the nation's Under-17 football team of participating in the Under-17 World Cup became dim in Kaduna where they played a one all draw in a qualifying match against their Congolese counterparts which had earlier defeated them 2 nil in Congo.  The Congolese won on a 3-1 aggregate.

 

13th September

 

* Nigeria and the United States began a 2-day summit on the Niger Delta crisis in Washington DC .

 

*Central Bank of Nigeria gave all deposit money banks up to 31st December 2010 to replace external auditors that have been appointed for more than 10 years.

 

*Tragedy struck in the North Central city of Kano where a senior State Security Service officer Garba Bello Hadejia, his wife and three children were hacked to death in their home at about 1.30am by unknown assailants.

 

14th September

 

*While security operatives grappled to unravel the mystery behind the death of the SSS chief on the 13th , in a related development, unknown assailants again murdered Abdulahi Muazu, a top official of the anti graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions in his Kaduna residence.

 

15th September

 

*Former military President Ibrahim Babangida in Abuja at a political rally declared his interest to contest the 2011 Presidential election.

 

16th September

 

*About 50 groups of youths besieged the gate of Niger State Government House to protest alleged non-payment of allowances promised them by the State Government to attend the presidential rally of former Military leader, Ibrahim Babangida.

 

*The Federal Government said it was committed to implementing a new 5-year countdown strategy/roadmap to accelerate the country's program toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

 

17th September

 

*Guarantee Trust Bank announced that it would be divesting its non-banking subsidiaries in compliance with the new regulation by the Central Bank of Nigeria abolishing universal banking.

 

*National Security Adviser to the President, Aliyu Gusau resigned to join the race for the 2011 Presidential election, thus his deputy, Kayode Are is to serve as Acting National Security Adviser.

 

*Unknown gunmen abducted five members of the National Youth Service Corpse in their lodge in Umuogba Community Secondary School Omuma Local Council of River State.

 

18th September

 

*President Goodluck Jonathan finally publicly declared his intention to contest the 2011 Presidential election at the Eagle Square , Abuja .

 

*Former Senate leader, and father of Kwara State governor, Olusola Saraki and leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the North Central State disagreed over Saraki's endorsement of his daughter, Senator Gbemi Saraki as the governorship candidate of the party.

 

*Former National Chairman of All Peoples Party now All Nigeria Peoples Party Mahmoud Waziri died in Medina , Kingdom of Saudi Arabia .

 

19th  September

 

*All Nigeria Peoples Party held its National Congress ahead of the 2011 elections in Abuja .

 

*The Independent National Electoral Commissions made public its intention to seek more time to prepare adequately for the 2011 elections.

 

20th September

 

*The National Examination Council (NECO) released the results of May/June 2010 NECO examinations which revealed that below 25% of the 1.1 million candidates passed English language and Mathematics at credit level.

 

*Former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions, Nuhu Ribadu declared his intention to contest for the Presidency on the platform of opposition Action Congress of Nigeria.

 

*National working committee of ruling Peoples Democratic Party announced an adjournment in its timetable for the delegate polls, giving Saturday 25th September as the new date.

 

21st September

 

 

*Lecturers from all Eastern States Universities staged a protest at the entrance of the University of Science and Technology, Enugu to push their demands in their on-going 9-week-old strike.

 

 

22nd September

 

*A High Court in Abeokuta Ogun State affirmed Tunji Egbetokun as the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, nullifying the recent attempt by the minority members to oust the majority.

 

23rd    September

 

*Representatives of 17 African nations converged on Abuja to examine the 50 years of nationhood and chart a course for the next fifty years.

 

There was panic in Jalingo, Taraba State capital as news of a planned attack by Boko Haram sect circulated within the city.

 

 

24th   September

 

*President Jonathan approved the immediate removal of the General Officers Commanding (GOCs) and the Brigade of Guards.

 

25th  September

 

*Nigeria's Flying Eagles defeated their hosts in Port Louis , Mauritius 2 nil in the African Youth Championships Qualifiers for Libya 2011.

 

*Vice President Namadi Sambo in Lagos commissioned the 18-Metre Independent Tower in honour of Nigeria 's four founding fathers; Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Alhaji Ahmadu Bello.

 

26th September

 

*Eastern state governors endorsed the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 Presidential election.

 

27th September

 

*Gunmen in Aba , Abia State seized a school bus conveying pupils to school, demanded a 20 million Naira ransom.

 

*President Jonathan submitted his Presidential nomination form to the Peoples Democratic Party's National Organising Secretary, Uche Secundus, the President however claimed that the party can not zone the Presidency as it has no control over it.

 

 

28th September

 

*National Assembly granted the Independent National Electoral Commissions three months extension on the conduct of 2011 elections earlier fixed for January 2011.

 

*Director of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Olusegun Demuren was elected President of the General Assembly of International Council of Aviation Organisation in Montréal , Canada .

 

29th September

 

*The Federal Government kicked off Nigeria 's Golden Jubilee anniversary with the launch of a new N50 commemorative note and non-circulating coins.

 

*President Jonathan in full Naval Ceremonial outfit reviewed the Presidential Naval Fleet at the Western Naval Command, Apapa, Lagos , pledging to equip the Nigerian Navy to be able to rout oil thieves in the country's waters.

 

*Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions confiscated some property belonging to former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose standing trial for alleged embezzlement of state fund and money laundry before he was impeached from office.

 

30th September

 

*Three people died in a stamped while bags of rice provided by the First Lady, Patience Jonathan for the Golden Jubilee celebrations were being distributed in Abuja .

 

*Security operatives in River State stormed hideouts of kidnappers in the state, freed several captives including the abducted National Youth Service Corps members and arrested about 40 suspects.
