"Big boys in Ogboju style kept packets of B & H in their shirt pockets, smoking once in a while to attract some ovation from the rest of the crowd. How could a teacher have scolded or caned a boy that had a pack of cigarettes in his pocket, or who, while still in school, had impregnated a girl and would soon be a father? But some teachers looked beyond the cigarette packs and the big boys' beards, not giving a damn whether a boy had become a man, or whether it was the cigarette that was smoking the big boy."
