The latest issue regarding our MP's trying to delay the implementing the new constitution is not justifiable. The stance by the MPs in placing the implementation in jeopardy is an act of betrayal on the Kenyan people. The implementation of the KATIBA should not be pegged on parochial political and sectarian interests and using the IIBRC as a scapegoat but should be independent of such maneuvers.
Logically and with good intention, given we are in a Coalition government, the President and the PM walked a neutral path in naming the heads of the two crucial commissions in the implementation of the constitution, a clear indication that the two had defied the overtures of their allies to chose people who will lead the commissions without political sideshows hovering over their heads. This should not be captive to other matters, especially the IBRC VVM demands for clear separation between IIBRC and the constitutional implementation process.
Under the Constitution, the Executive is to exercise, uphold and safeguard the Constitution and sovereignty of the Republic, promote and enhance national unity by giving equal protection and respect to all. All should be given equal chances as the government fulfils its social contract. The bottom line should be the interest of the nation as opposed to narrow interests. As VVM, we are demanding for transparency and the respect of the constitution and the constitutional implementation time table devoid of political mechanizations from any quarters. The IBRC should be handled independently from the matter of commissions. We are watching our members of parliament keenly and their behavior now will determine what leadership they are offering this country at this critical time and this will be used as a measuring stick come 2012
The President and Prime Minister should not allow themselves to be led down the path of minority patronage but rather allow all Kenyans to compete and the best to take up such offices based on competence and ability to serve the nation and not sectarian interests. After all, the commissioners are meant to serve the good of the nation and not political, regional or sectarian interests. We call on our MPs to rise above these politics of the old order that we burried with the old constitution and embrace the 2nd Republic where meritocracy and national good guides our choices and actions.
