USA Africa Dialogue Series - RE: Akunyili Condemns Use of ‘Naija’ in Place of Nigeria

Yinka,

It is like Ex-CBN Governor Soludo focusing on banking polices that would prevent the spraying of Naira in parties and obituaries; he forgot that people now spray Dollar and Euros; besides, these hard currencies are used in bars and casinos all over the world without complaints; the issuing nations just focus on controlling counterfeiting, and illegitimate acquisition and use of the currencies; and of course, on the STRENGTH (exchange rates) AND BUYING POWER OF THE CURRENCY in the international marketplace, not how legitimate possessors handle them. These are JOKERS!!!! Take care. JUI

Who say power is not intoxicating. This is type of statement what I would expect from ex-Minister of Iraq Tariq Aziz not Dora.

I think Mama Rebranding need to clarify the setting where the Naija is uncharitable. How would she stop people from using the

word Naija in a friendly conversation? In the process of rebranding Nigeria, I hope Dora respect the people right to free speech.

Emeks:

A SERIOUS-minded visiting group CANNOT, in their presentation, use the word "Naija" in place of Nigeria in an official document that needed Government's attention and perhaps consideration…". It is like saying that a visiting group in the US is using nicknames or common parlance slurs like  "Uncle Sam" in place of American President or Yankees in place of Americans in official communication; same in Britain, France, Germany and elsewhere in the civilized world. Comedians, talk-show anchors, regular guys/gals are free and so freely use those terms in the US and beyond and nobody will read anything out of the ordinary to it!  The key POINT is that no serious-minded person or groups would elect to use the nickname or joking or caricature name of a nation or leader in an Official document.

So we expect Madam Dora to ignore such petty stuffs and advise whoever extends/elevates such a joke to an official level appropriately or the the person/group does not deserve Govt's attention! Shikiena!

As I observed previously, the reaction of Madam Dora suggest a sad Executive Idleness or pettiness! It is inconceivable that a SERIOUS leader will bother about the nicknames the country and leaders are called, come to talk of Nigeria where there a serious national challenges. There is no City in Nigeria that can boast of a Mass transit system, safe pipe-borne water and regular electricity, which are now taken for granted in serious nation and form the bedrock for national development and advances in comfortable modern living, stimulation of vigorous private and public entrepreneurship, industrialization, telecommunication, commerce and tourism. It is a HUGE JOKE in leadership to be seen or heard querying the use of Naija in public or for not considering any official communication that elects to use a slur as a non-serious communication and treat it as such! That is the POINT! Take care. JUI (Still PISSED!)

Take care. JUI

EOU,

Please tell me! How does Prof. Dora Akunyili's advice to Nigerians on this occasion define the quality of her Ph.D? The Lady noted that the corrupted name "Naija" for Nigeria is now sinking deep into the psyche of the citizenry so much so that a visiting group, in their presentation, had to use the word "Naija" in place of Nigeria in an official document that needed Government's attention and perhaps consideration, and as a result kicked against the phenomenon.

For goodness sake where did Dora Akunyili go wrong on this occasion? One can excuse the casual use of the word "Naija", but putting it down on an official document that needed government's attention and consideration, is totally unacceptable! Let's be serious!

I agree with the Information and Communications' Minister! She is absolutely right!

Somebody remind me again; how exactly again did this woman become a professor?

I can understand how she became a minister. After all, being smart is not a requirement for the job.

How is it offensive to refer to Nigeria as Naija? Now, she wants to write to companies to stop using the word. Great idea! While you are it Prof, try reading that portion of the Constitution on freedom of speech.

Apparently, she is the only one who still believes in her rebranding project. We all can see what positive impact it has had on Naija's(oops, I meant Nigeria's) image. Good people, great nation and goofball public office holders!

EOU.

Akunyili Condemns Use of ‘Naija’ in Place of Nigeria

From Paul Obi in Abuja, 11.15.2010

The Federal Government has condemned in strong terms the use of “Naija†in place of Nigeria, saying that such usage is “very uncharitable and unpatrioticâ€.
Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, made the remarks while receiving the participants of Heir Apparent Reality Show in her office in Abuja yesterday.

Akunyili, who frowned on the continuous misrepresentation of the country's official name in place of a “corrupt†version, said: "It is very offensive to call Nigeria ‘Naija’. We are making plans to write companies to stop using the word Naija. I have heard that name Naija in adverts. I want them to go back and remove that word.
"If anybody says this is Naija, ask the person, 'Where is Naija?' We have to stop this word because it is catching up with the young. If we don't put a stop to its usage now, it will continue to project us wrongly.â€
The minister's condemnation was prompted by a sentence in the presentation of the visiting group where “our world is Naija†was inserted.

Akunyili, who fervently spoke against the use of the word, ordered that the sentence be removed from the programme and changed to “our world is Nigeriaâ€.
“Naija†is obviously a Nigerianised form of Niger, from where Nigeria derived its name.
The word is popularly used by musicians, artistes, advert managers and corporate companies and it could be positive or negative, although it is being used more positively in recent times.
It is believed to be trendier and is used by the younger generation.

Though no official condemnation of the word has been made, several reports have warned of the consequence of the usage of such words among the youths.
Earlier, the minister commended the group for what she called patriotic creativity in their new jingles, saying: "This is the greatest success we have recorded in the rebranding Nigeria project."
She further assured the participants that the ministry would ensure that its jingles on rebranding project were replaced with the ones on Heir Apparent once the correction on the Naija word was effected.

Also speaking, Bonat Tagwi, who represented the Director General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr Idi Farouk, sponsors of the reality show, said the programme was meant to replicate government's effort towards the young, whereby the ideals of leadership would be inculcated on them
