USA Africa Dialogue Series - RE: : Re:Varsity Students Stone EdoGov. Oshimhole OverTuition Fees Hike

John Ebohon:
I will respond to your questions directly as follows:
1. The difference between my choice of words for Igbinedion and that of ERG for Oshiomhole is that first, history will cerify that former Gov Igbinedion did NOTHING and achieved Nothing for Edo State during his 2-term trnure as Gov; however, the news of Gov Oshiomhole's achieve's achievement is on the lips and pages of Edos and Nigerians daily; that is a FACT. Second, the evidence for former Gov Igbinedion's looting of Edo treasury is there in the court of crimainal justice, having been convicted for stealing Edo funds; however, eRG's name-calling and baseless accusation that Gov Adams is a pick-pocket is tantamount to gratuitous innuendoes that have no basis in reality. That is also a FACT!
2. I have realized that some of you look for straws to hang on when you lack the bare FACTs to substantiate your biases and adventures in petty politicking that take soicety and people nowhere; how else would I explain your allusion to Wilson Iguade's uninformed comment about my response in-kind to a person who had called me names; obviously, guade did not read the genesis of the thread to appreciate the context of my reaction; he just saw my response and jumped into the conclusion that "JUI who frowns against name-calling is calling somebody names"; however, when I produced a sequential and chronological development of the issues, he gave up; and reasonable people contacted me to say they saw my point. So if you were an unbiased reader, you would have done the same thing other reasonable people did, check my response to Iguade and save yourself of this out-of-point remarks you are making here now.
3. On Ya'Usman's comment, again I say your biased approach to issues appeared to have dimmed your sensibilities not to appreciate the fact that, first, I did not follow the thread on Uzamere's visit to our Royal Father, because I was not interested in it from the headlines; the records would show that I did not comment on it; second, Ya'Usam and I dont agree on all the issues and the archives of these egroups will verify that; and third, to say that Ya'Usman is of my "ilk", whatever you mean by that, is condescending and unfortunate because I have NEVER said anything out of place against our Edo tradition or any other tradition, come to talk of our Revered Royal Father and Oba; in fact, I even cautioned Ya'Usman last week or during the weekend when I felt he was unruly for telling the Pope to shut up because of what the Pope said about condon use to control HIV transmission. So what are the basis for your unrestrained statement?
4. On the wanton negative reactions of eRG toward anything about Gov Adams, it is interesting that you are calling me naive when you chose to mix apples and oranges by comparing eRG's regular bad-mouthing of Gov Adams (whether he performs or not) to Americans calling a President who master-minded the Watergate scandal a crook or how some Iraqis see and react to American Presidents; or how eggs, tomatoes etc have been thrown at politicians and leaders for policies the perpetrators consider as unfavorable to them. My Question to you is: what has Gov Adams done to eRG that makes the Gov deserve to be called a pick-pocket, a bloody tailor mending Okrika clothings, a nongraduate who does not appreciate a University education or a tragedy? Let's hear!

5. Finally, it appears you SEIZED this opportunity to go all over the place around issues that are or are not connected to the subject-matter but I will just IGNORE them as they are merely fishing and finger-pointing; but to just mention few, you alluded to how people like JUI messed up Igbinedion because you assume the guy has no mind of his own; how some of the people who messed Igbinedion up are around Gov Adams now, as if you dont know that there people popularly called AGIP (Any Govt In Power), who as citizens would pledge to serve anybody; and that ULTIMAELY, regardless of who is around a leader, the onus lies on the leader to decide what to do with his/her duties and services to society, and have his/her legacy tied with it, as we have done with Ogbemudia and his lofty legacy; as we have been doing with Lucky Igbinedion and his ineptitude; and as we will do with Adams Oshilmhole and the resounding successes he is recording. These are the FACTS of public life my Brother John! Take care. JUI

JUI,

What is the difference between you and the woman so vividly described by the veteran journalist Abarti? In particular, what is the difference between your choice of words for Igbinadion and that of ERG for Oshiomhole? What is civilised and decorous about your diatribe? You were reminded here just few days ago about your duplicitous nature and take on matters in that you accuse others of exactly the attitude you have come to perfect and represent.

Look at the statement of one of your ilk - Ya Usman following the visit of Senator Uzamere to the Palace that the institution of the monarchy will become a game if dragged into politics, and for which he was roundly educated. Why did you not feed this veiled attack on the Palace through your supposed civilised and decorous sieve?

If anything is nauseating, it is your unbounded sycophancy and naivety. You are naive in that a seasoned commentator would have humourised and reduced ERG's statement to a political satire. ERG can describe Oshiomhole the way he likes after all a journalist stood up and called an American President a crook. Someone threw shoes at an American President, which is considered the highest insult in the Arab world. Eggs, tomatoes, water, and custard have been thrown at politicians and indeed, Igbinadion was bombarded with pure water and stones at Ogbemudia stadium, and the world did not come to an end.

Perhaps Igbinadion would have performed better had he not surround himself with cheerleaders like you. Look the ridiculous suggestion that people should call home, do a little research, identify when an event took place and who were present before reacting to a newspaper article that they themselves have no problems commenting on!

At the same breadth, the registrar and the vice-Chancellor of AAU are recommended for a sack based on what was read from the said article that have been deemed inaccurate. One wonders if they called home to find out the exact AAU student population, and who did they talk to? Anyone that has worked in the education sector knows how difficult it could be tracking students. Even at the micro or course level, you find that a class list may contain names of students that are not present while there are students present but not on the list because of the different entry levels and exit routes, which makes student number to vary from time to time. In a country where you can be attending university and yet get disqualified after three or four years of study for not "passing clearing" what ever that means.

JUI, you keep referring to Lucky Igbinadion's regime at the instance of any criticisms of Oshiomhole but the very 'who was who' in Igbinadion administration are now in ACN and signs of Igbinadion early years in government are observable in Oshiohole's administration. Igbinadion embarked upon two major 'white elephant projects' the Ogba 'bullet proof' housing scheme and the dredging of Ikpoba river to pave way to a tourism resort where billions of Naira raised from the capital market were allegedly spent. There were many like you who ran naked on the streets of North America and Europe to celebrate these projects while those who dared question the wisdom of the projects were vilified and deemed the 'enemies within' - today these projects are abandoned and are now distant memories.

When Osunbor came along, he initiated his own programme, example of which was Akpakpava - putting bollards on the middle of the road and few flower pots, which cost hundreds of millions. Just as you are doing, the non-performed Igbinadion and the performing Osunbor was a constant theme of discussion. Even your current behaviour was tamed in comparison to what we witnessed on the various edo-fora. Even failed ex-local government chairmen became political pundits while many became cheerleaders. Indeed, some highly respected individuals became commissioners without portfolios or political advisers and compromised themselves in the process. Through out they pretended to be championing the cause of Edos and today, they are silent and waiting for another opportunity to reinvent themselves.

My regards,

OJ

Brother eRG, yours is a nauseating and disgusting case of wanton insolence, and unnecessary DISTRACTION from a subject-matter! What has all the disparaging and condescending names you called Gov Oshiomhole got to do with questioning the Gov's reasons, motive and objective for hiking the fees, or the visionary leadership and superior governance the Gov has rendered to Edo State, which is a surely refreshing departure from the "do-thing, endless looting and ineptitude of your PDP Lucky Igbenedion regime"? Frankly, you could use some civilized and decorous restraint in your characterization of Gov Adams; you are neither the only Edo watching Gov Adams, nor the smartest Edo to evaluate his worth and effectiveness. The OVERWHELMING AGREEMENT among Edos and Nigerians in general is that Gov Adams has done is and is doing an EXCELLENT job of governance in Edo State! So what is your beef with good governance that is needed in all areas of Nigeria?
Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the out-of-character school fees hikes being attributed to Gov Adams, a known and avowed advocate of Education, a more reasonable approach to this news is to QUESTION the Gov's reasons,  motives and objectives. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that approach from any stakeholder, citizen or even interested observers. But to rain abuses and gutter language on a known social advocate and demonstrated performer, is clearly to surrender to a trendy reality from some of you on these egroups, whose obsession is just to maintain your guerrilla attacks on Gov Adams, waiting for any silly, unfounded and even unreasonable reasons to discharge your venoms on him. It is unreasonable, condescending, gratuitous and ILL-ADVISED. Take care. JUI

Thanks Itohan for sharing. Can you please tell us if this N60000 is for a year or per term?

Also, was it the Governor that disbanded the SUG or the VC?

I was made to understand that he was booed but not stoned and was later given the opportunity to address why the increase.  The conflicting student numbers from both the VC and the bursar is enough to attract dismissal of both officers. The Governor should find out the exact number of student and dismiss which of these officers provided a wrong information.

 Gov. Oshimhole OverTuition Fees Hike

I was at the school last week and was reliably informed by some students that the governor was actually at their school ,he was stoned and booed. He blamed the Vice principal for not knowing the total number of student in the school as the bursar gave a different number from what the VC gave to him and he therefore increased the school fees of all the students from N15000 previously paid per student to N60000.He also disbanded the SUG so there was no opposition to his increase!Itohan Iyoha

 ERG,

Before you start rejoicing, can you please verify the source of what has been written? Please call home or do a little research to show that this actually took place. When did this happen and who was present at this time?  Was any arrest made? Did anyone interview the student union President to find out why they are protesting?  Did the students make any representation before now to ask about the increase of tuition fees?

There is simply no reason to jump into conclusion but Dr Ebohon has also raised an important point.

 Thanks
 Ben

ERG,

The rise in tuition fees is inevitable and the students should rather concentrate on the direction to which the money goes. If the money is ploughed back into the University and services improves, the better it is for the students, staff, and Edo State. What the Edo State government should have  done was to clearly map out where the money is going and carry the student body along. The action of the students must have been motivated by not knowing where the money will be spent. AAU and other tertiary institutions in the state require huge sums for capital infrastructure and services and some of this amount must come in fees.

My regards,

OJ

Varsity Students Stone Edo Gov. Oshimhole Over Tuition Fees Hike

Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Alliyu Oshimhole, will not forget in a hurry, his in the hands of students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Benin City, who hauled him stones and called him unprintable names over his government's hike in tuition fees. The event which occurred at Edo State Institute of Management an Technology, gave the governor's security men an uphill task as they battled to control the angry students who were protesting the increase in their school fees.
