THIS DAY
President to Lead Uduaghan's Re-Election Campaign
From Chuks Okocha and Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja , 11.12.2010
President Goodluck Jonathan is set to lead the campaign for Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan's re-election bid for governorship seat in Delta State in conformity with the desire of the Peoples Democratic Party to reclaim the state.
The Court of Appeal, Benin, had on Tuesday voided Uduaghan's election and ordered a fresh election within 90 days following a petition by Mr. Great Ogboru, the gubernatorial candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party in the 2007 election.
The decision to have Jonathan lead Uduaghan's campaign was said to have been reached by the PDP after assessing the performance of the former governor and the control he has of the party in the state, added to the fact that the previous tensions between the centre and the state have been sorted out.
Uduaghan was, according to sources in the presidency, directed to reconcile with the feuding members of the party so that a common front can be forged for a smooth victory during the re-run election.
According to a party source, "The need for the reconciliation was predicated on the fact that the PDP is a dominant force in the state, as well as to avoid people working at cross purposes when unity is needed for victory.
"The meeting which led to the decision to back Uduaghan was because he has the structures that can achieve victory for himself and the president in the 2011 elections."The source added that the decision to back Uduaghan is meant to further consolidate the hold of the party in the state "and to avert a situation in which the PDP would lose ground to the opposition as has been the case in the South-west."
"The president wants nothing to jeopardise our chances in Delta State," the source explained. As a result, the president is said to have directed all aggrieved persons who are in different factions to bury their differences in the interest of the party in Delta State.
Also yesterday, after a meeting with the National Working Committee of the PDP, Uduaghan expressed optimism that his record as Delta State governor would guarantee his re-election.Uduaghan spoke after the national chairman of the party, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo proclaimed him as the governorship candidate of PDP for the re-run election.
The former governor who was at the PDP national secretariat with the acting governor of the state, Prince Sam Obi, the state chairman of PDP, Peter Nwaoboshi and other officials said: "I am not talking about the big time projects like the airport alone, but my projects at the grassroots like the free medical programmes for the under five year olds, other health care projects, bursary allowances to students, and roads projects.
Uduaghan also described the re-run governorship election as a PDP affair, as all the councillors, local government chairmen, law makers - both state and National Assembly - are from the PDP.
Uduaghan added that he and his team would engage in a vigorous campaign leaving no stone unturned in the process, while describing his removal as shocking.
Nwodo said in line with the tradition of PDP, "Uduaghan remains" the governorship candidate of the party in the re-run governorship election.
He said that though the nullification of Uduagahn's election came to the party as a shock, "the party has put that behind it and is now standing solidly behind Uduaghan and the leadership of Nwaoboshi."
