USA Africa Dialogue Series - [Naijaintellects] RE: | TRAIN/Monorail in Onitsha Anambra state

Idowu,
As you may be aware, these petty pilfering and mismanagement can also be found in developed societies; but the developed societies have, through serious and purposeful leaderships, instituted some automated processes and systems that check and cross-check these operations, and drastically reduced (not eliminate) the practices. Apart from the low level pilfering and work attitude problems, more serious nagging problems (yet to be the full focus of under-developed societies) are in the financial sectors, such as insider trading and the mess in Wall Street and other Bourses, which are MAJOR social ills that enrich the few and later push the problems to Govt and people; however, you can watch how a series of purposeful and serious leaderships are systematically tearing the mess down. In the end, the regulations and policing with be so tight in these sectors that sanity will take over; may be that is when our developing societies will pay attention to them. We will keep playing this catch-up game until a series of purposeful leaders take giant bold steps to rescue us. Take care. JUI

The problem with Nigeria is not the will, but the intangibles such as constant power supply, Nigerian factors in running a business. Except you manage every facet of the business by yourself, the employees will eat you to the bones. The other factor is maintenance culture of Nigerians. I hope the screws and part of the train and the rail will not find themselves in the silverware manufacturing plants.

Pronto!!!

If Gov Obi is SERIOUS about this monorail and has the political WILL to see it through, you will soon see Mass Transits in major Cities in Nigeria. It has been a serious concern that there is no City with a durable mass transit system in Nigeria. Look around the world and it will be clear that Nigeria is an exemption among modern nations where no major City has a mass transit, a reflection of leadership failure in Nigeria.
So Go Gov Obi, if you are SERIOUS! Anambrans and all Nigerians will SUPPORT you. Take care. JUI

Anambra, Globim sign MoU for monorail in Onitsha News Tuesday, November 23, 2010

ANAMBRA State government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an Canada-based company, Globim Corporation, for the finance, design, construction and operation of monorail system in the commercial city of Onitsha.

Governor Peter Obi signed for the state government, while the chairman of Globim, Dr. Jude Igwemezie, signed for the company during a brief ceremony at Government House, Awka.

The project will start with a feasibility study of the city, followed by the actual execution of the project.

Obi said the project would upgrade transport system in the city to meet the demands of the day, in line with the vision of the state government to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs.

He explained that the monorail system was part of the effort of government to improve infrastructure and social amenities in Onitsha, especially with its new status as one of the five fastest growing cities in the world.

Commissioner for special duties, Mr. Robert Okonkwo whose ministry oversees the project said it was an innovation that would help decongest the city and enhance easy movement.

Okonkwo said the company would not only build the rail, but would also provide other facilities needed for the system including the trains which he explained would be built locally with potentials to provide more than five thousand jobs.

Also speaking, the chairman of the company, Dr. Igwemezie commended Governor Obi for giving his company the opportunity to contribute to the new transport system for the state.

According to him, the first phase of the project would involve a survey to establish viability and engineering feasibility, adding that this would be followed by the execution of the project.

Details of the agreement showed that the company would provide the funds, execute the project and manage it for sometime before handing it over to the state government.
