Seven killed in Nigeria attacks

Irish Times Latest News 30/12/2010

A radical group attacked a police vehicle in northeastern Nigeria, killing seven people in the latest in a series of attacks by the group in the last week, the military said today.

A military spokesman said the vehicle was "burnt to ashes" in yesterday's attack by the Boko Haram group at a bus station in the Dala area of Maiduguri. Eight people were wounded.

Boko Haram, which wants strict Islamic law imposed throughout Nigeria, claimed responsibility for Christmas Eve bombings in the central Nigerian city of Jos which led to the deaths of at least 80 people.

Nine people died in two other attacks by the group in Maiduguri this week.

The group, whose name means "Western education is sinful" in the Hausa language spoken across northern Nigeria, is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

Maiduguri sits in one of Nigeria's poorest regions near its northeastern borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

We grief sorrowfully on the untimely death of a comrade on the crusade for a Better Governed Nigeria; a dreamed Nigeria that will boast of regular electricity and water ONE DAY, InShaH Allah!

In any case, it is WARMLY PEACEFUL and exciting in EDO State this 2010 Holiday season; no kidnappings, no accidents, no fights; although the political campaigns and activities are EVERYWHERE! It's Democracy in ACTION IN EDO: Check Benin City roads; the Auchi-Jattu-Agenebode Exit from Abuja road; et cetera!  I wonder if Brother eRG is trying to short-circuit this Edo Peace and Progress march with another of his party Do-NADA and treasury-looting incursion? MBAaaaaa ooooooo! Gov Adams is doing just FINE for now! We can critic, suggest or yell at him to do better; But another Bros Lucky dance is ill-advised! Happy Holidays and the Best the coming New Year. It's moi, JUI, just returning from a JOYOUS HOME TRIP to Edo. Take care. JUI

Sir Okala,

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you in advance.
Thanks for the correction which has been noted. I thought the fella was a girlie
and not a geezer after all we have another gentleman that goes by the name
Modupe - a very feminine sobriquet. It was nauseating reading Eric Ayoola's
riposte with a political slant on a solemn header on the death of truly
democratic activist.

I was at the Liberation Stadium yesterday for Gov Amaechi's declaration of
intent for a second term. The guy is great and I wish PDP could find one of his
type for my Edo State. With another four years with him at the helm, Port
Harcourt will become Dubai in the creeks. He's definitely coming back, at least
Chief Anthonio Anenih said so at the event.

God bless Rivers State! And Nigeria as well.

My dear eRG,
I think his name should be Eric Ayoola, and not the way you wrote it. Just a
point of observation.

Wishing you and yours a Prosperous New Year!

Erica  Yoola:

I expect you to call a spade what it is all times, but your political jaundice
wouldn't let you do that, would it? What do you call the killings and
political assassinations ongoing in Edo State under an AC government? And of
course you're not aware that Abia State government was birthed by PPA in 2007,
so also is the fact of all the murders in the Southwest under previous AD
governments.

ERG, the security situation has never been worse in our nation's history. Under
the PDP's 12 years misrule, we have a highly compromised, inefficient  and
politicised police that has never been able to apprehend and prosecute one
single assasin or their initiators.

There are no fifth or sixth columnist here, these arer people in power enjoying
all the protection of the state as they kill and maim their real and perceived
enemies.

Where the perpetrator of a crime does not enjoy protection from high up or where
the perpetrator him or her self is not the highly placed individual,  the
Nigeria police does its work, otherwise it is a case of unknown assasins that
remain unknown for ever.

Chidi Nwosu must not be another of such notorious murder under the PDP, but the
reality of the matter is that for as long as the police are under the control of
the PDP Government, no such assassination would be solved.

And they want 4 more  years.

Chidi Nwosu,

I was actually planing to call you a week ago to get an unbiased assessment of
the security situation of Abia State since the taken out of "Osisikankwo", the
notorious kidnapping merchant. Well, it's too late now, init? This is the
ultimate price we have to pay for fighting injustice, criminality and brigandage
in authority.

Whodunnit? We don't know, but the clues are all around us. The usual suspects
are no longer the master-minds behind these heartless crimes for fifth
columnists abounds in our current democratic dispensation. A friend of mine
interested in a House of Assembly seat got shot weeks ago in Benin  City, some
of his supporters blamed the incumbent who happened to be another friend as
well. Phew! That was a near-miss.

Stay  safe everyone as we approach the most critical phase of our existence as a
nation.
