We invite scholars, colleagues, students and friends to attend, participate or submit papers for the Conference in Honor of Professor A.G. Hopkins on Saturday, April 9, 2011. The goal of this conference is to celebrate the distinguished work of Professor A. G. Hopkins and his contributions to the field of history. A book written in his honor, Africa, Empire and Globalization: Essays in Honor of A.G. Hopkins, will be presented to him. Participants who wish to present papers can present original ideas or use the festschrift as a focal point to advance their own academic interests and push the frontiers of knowledge to the next generation. Graduate students may attend to interact with established scholars in the areas of Empire, Globalization, Imperialism, World History, Africa, and Economic History.
Hopkins's career is rich, held together by interest in the connections between the local and the national, the national and the regional, and the regional and the global. In thus interconnecting the world, a philosophy of history emerges--how economic forces shape political realities. His work, while being quite broad-ranging spatially, has remained topically focused on economic history, for the most part. This emphasis will be a large part of what he passes on to future scholarly generations. As we pay various tributes through the conference, we believe that, for our shared benefit, Professor A. G. Hopkins has demonstrated how to remain candidly involved in the debates over one's work, to defend oneself when appropriate, to reconsider one's work when necessary, and continually to build upon one's own body of work in compelling and relevant versions.
Possible these and paper topics may include:
- An examination of the work of Professor A.G. Hopkins
- Economic change and imperialism in Africa and beyond
- Africa in the world economy
- Economic transnationalism, globalization, and empire
- Hopkins's idea of "gentlemanly capitalism"
- Globalization, capitalism, and democracy
- Economics and nationalism
- British imperial history
- Economics, peace, and conflict
The deadline for submitting paper proposals is January 15, 2011. Proposals should include a
250-word abstract and title, as well as the author's name, address, telephone number, email
address, and institutional affiliation. Please submit all abstracts to
