NEWS RELEASE ON THE ELECTORAL FRAUD IN IVORY COAST
Upon widely consulting with African citizens overseas and various African organizations on the situation in the Republic of Ivory Coast, the undersigned pan-African organizations jointly condemn in the strongest terms the theft of the Ivorian presidential election.
We demand the immediate exit of the defeated President Laurent Gbagbo and the swearing in of the Honourable Alassane Ouattara as the duly elected president of the Republic of Ivory Coast. We want Mr. Gbagbo to commit to a peaceful transition of state authority to Mr Ouattara as confirmed by the Electoral Commission and accredited election monitors and independent observers.
Mr. Gbagbo has a right to challenge the outcome of the election in court if he has evidence of electoral fraud as he claims. No matter what his allegations are, he had no right to steal this ballot. Two wrongs do not equal a right. His action in committing this vote theft in broad daylight is downright criminal and actionable.
In which event Mr. Gbagbo does to stand down posthaste, we want the Security Council of the United Nations to pass a binding resolution with the following provisions:
- Recognition of the declaration of the Honourable Alassane Ouattara by the Election Commision as the winner of the Ivorian presidential election of November 2010,
- A demand for Mr Laurent Gbagbo to concede and vacate office within 48 hours upon the Ivorian UN ambassador being served with a copy of the Security Council Resolution, and
- Specific international action to remove Mr. Gbagbo in the event of his noncompliance with the notice to hand over the Honourable Ouattara.
From Kenya to Zimbabwe to Ivory Coast, we have noted with deep concern a disturbing trend in which African dictators are stealing elections and a hypocritical West and an ambivalent United Nations facilitating the despots to remain in office with power-sharing deals.
We want a permanent stop to these travesties posthaste before there is another genocide in Africa.
