~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Network of Black Farm Groups and Advocates Congress Completes Passage of Black Farmer Lawsuit December 1, 2010 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | Network of Black Farm Groups and Advocates For Immediate Release: December 1, 2010 Contact: Heather Gray 404 765 0991
Congress Passes Black Farmer Lawsuit Legislation ATLANTA...On November 30, 2010 the House of Representatives joined the Senate by passing the $1.15 billion appropriations bill that will fund the late petitioners in the black farmer lawsuit that was filed against the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The original lawsuit was settled in 1999. Many individuals have yet to file a claim in the lawsuit. This vote in the House means that finally the late petitioners in the Black farmer lawsuit will have their day in court after years of indecision. The issue is also one of recognizing the decades of discrimination experienced by farmers and individuals who attempted to get services from their own government and were denied because of the color of their skin. It is hoped that this process and recognition will result in ending discriminatory practices by the USDA. After numerous visits to Washington, DC by representatives of the Network of Black Farm Groups over the past few months, there is finally some closure. The next phase will be one of implementation and to assure that those who file their claims are treated with fairness and offered relief expeditiously. The Network of Black Farm Groups and Advocates is thankful for the support the Black farmer lawsuit ultimately received in Congress and throughout the country. We also support the Secretary of Agriculture's efforts to resolve all of the outstanding lawsuits against the USDA for discrimination of underserved farmers. ### Network of Black Farm Groups and Advocates
