USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: INEC registers 775,000 eligible voters in Sokoto

Dear All

Well, Sokoto's 2006 Census population figure was 3.703 million, putting its voting population to be roughly half of that - or 1.851 million.  A 60-70% registration rate in Sokoto would require 1.1 to 1.3 million voters registered, so 775,000 voters registered in Sokoto in one week, if true, is not bad.

We need to trust but verify - and read how other states are doing....

I read that it was 1.3 milion registered in Lagos State in the first week?  INEC should provide the one-week registration population report on a state-by-state basis - so that the world may know.

INEC registers 775,000 eligible voters in Sokoto

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commissioner in Sokoto, Ahmed Mahuata, said on Sunday that about 775,000 eligible voters had been registered in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mahuta was speaking shortly after monitoring some registration centres in Sokoto metropolis.

He expressed satisfaction with the turnout of people, especially women who came out in large numbers to register.
He said that already, steps had been taken to address some of the challenges witnessed at the commencement of the exercise.

"We will ensure availability of cartridges and voter register, among others, to ensure hitch-free exercise," he said.

Matuta warmed against registering of underage children, describing it as illegal, as any one caught would be prosecuted.

He added that it was a crime for underage children to be registered and called on traditional and religious leaders to sensitise their people on the dangers involved in such actions.

The INEC commissioner called on the people to come out to participate in the exercise for the overall political growth of the state.

In Ekiti State, the Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory (FCT), retired Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade has sought the co-operation and encouragements of Nigerians toward the success of the ongoing voter registration.
