SA navy deployed to Mozambique and Ivory Coast
The frigate SAS Mendi is heading into the Mozambique Channel on anti-piracy patrol. On the other side of the continent the logistical supply ship SAS Drakensberg was lying off Ivory Coast on Monday.
Somali pirates increased their operations from the horn of Africa to other parts of the continent. It is believed that the pirates have moved thousands of nautical miles east of the Indian coast and similar distances in the south of the ocean.
South Africa provided assistance after calls by the Mozambique government.
In the troubled Ivory Coast region the SAS Drakensberg would be able to evacuate diplomatic personnel if military operations against Laurent Gbagbo took place.
